Recording dialog on location or in studio

I am in the process of shooting a short film and this question came to my head. Should I record the actors dialog on location or have them do their lines over in a studio during post (as I have access to such studio)? My idea would be to record alot of ambient sound from the shooting location and add this to the soundtrack aswell.

Is there any major setbacks for using this method over the other one?

The thing is I have no experience regarding on-set audio recording but I have a friend who knows this whole studio thing.

Thanks

It really depends on what kind of mics you have. If you have some quality lavs and shotguns, go to town on location... I'd personally recommend leaving the studio voice-overs for parts where you just couldn't get a good sound, but not constantly. You're going to face the enormous task of syncing all your dialog if you do it all in studio... so if you can get good location sound with your mics, by all means, use it!

On location for sure. Just pick up a decent mic and a cheap boompole. ADR is a pain in the ass in my experience with doing it. When you get on set just record a few minutes of room tone and try to keep the noise down as much as you can while they are recording. Totally listen to Random he is on point.
