Recording clean audio is a nightmare

My equipment. HVX200. Oktava MK012. Rycote BBG. Rhode Shockmount. Straight to camera using 25' XLR cable. I currently do not have a boom pole (getting a carbon fiber pole this week) and am using a hand grip attached to the shock mount.

Ran some tests. The slightest bit of movement...the slightest! and it picks up in the headphones. And Im just sitting still on my couch!!! How is clean audio possible. I think my equipment is on the quality end!!!!

my god. a nightmare. Yet people make films all the time. I see them! here, on this site. And the audio sounds fine. Im afraid to start filming my feature. i dont wanna waste peoples time.

while you use shity shock mount and do not cut the low end ( as the camera doesnt support it) you have low fq rumble
to get clean audio usially pay people like me good money
to reduce low fq noise , use better shock mount , 70-100hz lo cut in the middle , cloth cable and coon box , if it doesnt tell you **** , use sound man with his gear

you are probably hearing the cable rub. When the mic is rigged on the pole, I like to leave a half loop in the cable between the mic and the pole and then affix the wire to the pole with hair ties or velcro straps. That way some of the shock traveling up the cable is absorbed by the floating half loop of cable.

A few other things you can do:

1- Get a mixer with low cut (80Hz) or if you can't afford that, get an in-line low cut)
2- get a better shockmount (the K-Tek KSSM)
3- Get a carbon fiber boom pole (you already did this)
4- Get gardening gloves with the raised rubber dots to keep the boom op's hands from sliding on the pole
5- Use hair ties or velcro to attach the cable to the pole at every stage (lock)
6- Practice practice
7- Have fun!

Thanks for the help. Your suggestions were great, I will use them for sure. Practice is key with every thing, I suppose :)

I also have a shock mount made by Oktava. Wouldnt this be good for the Oktava Mic?

Oleg made a few good points that I missed.

1- Switching to a muslix cable for more flexibility and less rubbing
2- Hiring a pro (or aspiring semi pro) can sometimes be cheaper than getting everything you need.

One more thing from me
1- Getting a mic that is less prone to handling noise like the akg blueline with hyper cap

I am not sure about the oktava shockmount, but I would stick with the KSSM if you plan to use it with the BBG... it can't be beat!

sorry conn box -
http://www.rycote.com/products/full...dular_suspension/modular_accessories/connbox/

but that's good for rycote only , if you use any other attach a hook to the back of the suspension as SENNHEISER MKZ-20 TO make strain relief
or catch the cable on the back of the suspension if you dont use windshield .
use cloth cable as it have less self noise( muslix i dont sure they have cloth) , never use straight cable directly to the mic without short brake out cable or at least tied one as it comes with internal coiled booms

about high pass filters - usially its better use dedicated boxes or preamps ( sd , sosnosax and psc make these) as not all the barrels pass 48phantom

oktava holder good for s@m , the mic also could be use in for play a well .
if you have imagination i bet you will find what to do with rode shock mount as well
buy better tools or suffur for life:Drogar-Angry(DBG):

Hey guys,

I'm still busy getting my stuff together to get a nice audio kit. I've seen the Sabra shockmount ( http://sound-room.com/inc/sdetail/285 ) being recommended in some other threads, and as it's cheaper than the K-Tek KSSM I figured I'd go for that one. I would use it together with the K-Tek KE110CCR boom pole. Do you think it would produce more handling noise than the KSSM? I'd like to do it good at once, fitting into budget tho ;)

Ok, to be complete... this is the kit I'm currently looking at;
K-Tek KE110CCR boom pole
2 Musilux 25' cables
Oktava mk012a with HYPER cap
Sabra Som SSM1/SL
Rycote 19/20mm BBG
Rycote WindJammer for BBG

And I'd use it with the XH-A1.

Do you think this should do the job, and what is the weakest spot?

I have no problem spending the money, believe me. I want the best.

Will the Kssm accomodate the Audio Technia 4073a mic?

Thanks

I got a bag based kit so far but will be expanding to cart based next summer.

K-TEK 152CCR Pole - I found using a few tennis racquet overgrips on the bottom section works really well for absorbing any potential handling noise.

senn mkh-50, (comes with shock mount) - BBG - and windjammer as necessary
senn mkh-416 with KZEP windsystem

sd302 basic 3 channel field mixer
senn pro 280 phones

various lengths XLRs
breakaway style snake with camera return and various breakway lengths for bag to camera

couple sets senn g2 wireless w/cos-11 mics
rycote under and overcovers

petrol bag and harness
various piggin strips, rip ties and cable wraps.

Technique is really important. Its something you just have to constantly practice. However, standing around with your arms up in the air for long periods of time is very hard on your heart.

what do you normally record to?

the kssm is a great shockmount for short mics like the oktava and other hypers (schoeps, blueline etc.) it is woth the extra $$ especially if you have a BBG and plan to use it with it. Make sure you get the kssm with soft bands. Do a search on it

For shotguns you need a zepplin (unless you don't plan on using it outside). The k-tek k-zepp comes with a shockmount.
