Recording Audio Inside a Vehicle-Advice

Hey there,

What microphone would you recommend to record a scene in a mid-size vehicle? I have a driver, passenger, and 2 backseat actors. I'm going to be using a pistol grip and do not know whether to use a hyper-cardioid (technically an interior, right?) or something else. Advice is greatly appreciated!

More info .. what mid size is it? Is it being driven? Who will be talking? Where will the camera be positioned? What mics are you considering? Thx.

Cheers.

I think there is a video tutorial on just-such-a-thing over at "Rode Univeristy" on the Rode website (Rick Veirs videos). I think most people would recommend individual lavs, but if you don't have the budget, you might try an omni in the center, or a _really_ small person on the floor out-of-shot swinging a pistol grip and shotgun (??)...

I have a driver, passenger, and 2 backseat actors. Where's the camera gonna be and you with a pistol grip? Do you have an insert trailer? If not, four lavs and a 4-track recorder.. send em' on their way.
With two folks, driver/passenger talent, I generally attach lavs or small boundary mics (Sanken Cub) to the sun visors to a 2-track recorder.. "drive safe, have fun, see you later". If there is one, I"ll send a wireless monitor link to the follow vehicle.
"I don't know about you but, I NO LONGER WILL RIDE IN THE TRUNK" w/ actors driving.

A cardiod facing up in between the two people in the front places somewhere around the gear shifter. Another on in the back between the people in the back seat, again in between them. Or put a lav on each person. Or, you can hide something like a Sanken Cub-01 in the visor for the people in the front, and then hide one on the backs of the head restraints of the front seats to mic the people in the back.

I don't know if this is against forum rules, but do a search on google within the site jwsoundgroup.net, and you will find several very thorough threads. I will shoot several car scenes next week and just read up on it as well.

I mostly put wireless in the visor (the thing for the sun...?), and for the back in the drivers seat, just under the head restrains.

Not on clothes, because of the movements...and because it's the only source... so I rather choose to have "car sound" then "clothes rusling"

It will be driven, and all 4 have speaking parts. I was told that we'll have singles on each actor, probably a 2 shot for the backseat, and I don't think a wide with the camera static in the front. I have an AT4073, but would love to rent a cub that was mentioned above (great idea!). An omni in the center sounds helpful as well. I have only access to one lav, and re wiring each person depending on the shot seems like a good way to slow down production. Is there anything wrong with re planting the lav? Unfortunately I'm just day-playing this and have little detailed information. But if I can get in there with a pistol grip, would an MKH 50 work for me? Or even pistol gripping an omni mic that I rent?

And Rick R I feel ya about the trunk! I'm hoping that I can be in the front seat for the backseat shots, and in the backseat for the frontseat shots.

Thanks Jema, I've been to the JW site so I'll look threads up.
