Recording AUDIO in CAR---need opinion.

Hey guys!
Once again I turn to you for your great advice and opinion. I am shooting a scene in a car. I am mounting a car rig inside the car so it cut the noise. I am using the one with a suction cup and bogen head. I have both actors in the front seat.

Should I use a k6/me66? (I rather not, but it's the only mic i got)

Should I get me64 for the interior car?

Should I rent a lapel mic and connect to both actors?

I also thought of cheating the one actor and putting him in the back seat since he won't be in camera. What do you think?

thanks again

Re: Recording AUDIO in CAR---need opinion.

So you plan on the car moving? (I'd assume so with the car-rig.)

Your best bet is going to be a lav or a visor mounted hyper splitting the difference between your two actors.

A typical car-rig mic is the AKG ck93... and then a sound guy can use the active cable or a swivel to keep the body of the mic hidden and have just the cap pointing into the sweet spot. Any small hyper set up like this should work... but it's got to be solidly mounted OR shock mounted... not someplace in between.

You should experiment ahead of time to see what sounds best... if you can find a way to make that me66 work for you then you can just go with that...

Re: Recording AUDIO in CAR---need opinion.

2 hipper cardioid or cardioid from bello on flexi mounts or on the risors
can work also with cub pzms on the risor , for singles use booman on each actor , if you shoot from side you can place the booman with short mike on the back sit which will follow the dialog -

use the regu;;ar gassoline car and not disel one ( less noice) , close all the windows which not in the frame , or better check if you can shoot with close windous ( not working for side shotes if you shooting 2 shot

ok bring someone who did it befor ;)

Re: Recording AUDIO in CAR---need opinion.

Any recommendation on lav/lapel mics? Sennheiser or audio technica models. I am on a budget.

Also should I get two for both actors or just one and place it in the middle?

If I use a mic boom and put it between the two actors in front (windows close and a/c off) what kind of mic? I have the K6. So is it the ME64?

thanks guys

looking forward to here you advice

Re: Recording AUDIO in CAR---need opinion.

Rent some Lectro wireless for the shoot.

The car noise will usually make the dialog unbearable.  Try using a trailer to tow the car (simple U-haul rent in most places).  If that is not possible, luxury cars are really quiet and the Toyota Prius is dead silent until 30 or 40 mph (no combustion engine until higher speeds).  If thoses type of cars aren't possible and the driving is at night, you could try doing shooting poor man's process.

As Oleg said, get someone who has done this before, it takes some work to get it to work right, otherwise plan on some ADR.

Good luck.

Re: Recording AUDIO in CAR---need opinion.

If you put a mic in the visor, keep the windows up. If you want the windows down, put the mic down by the stereo between the two people in the fron seat. Something like an older Sennheiser 406 will work well.

Re: Recording AUDIO in CAR---need opinion.

You've said that you can close all the windows. A modern car will be very quiet so don't worry about engine noise, unless you are going 100mph. Some engine and trans noise is acceptable and realistic. Your easiest bet would be the hyper or the cardioid cap for the K6. Rig it in between, just out of shot, perhaps favoring the quieter talent. Lavs on wireless on the talent are not necessary and create problems with seat belt russle, clothing noises, etc.
The best way to do this, in my opinion, is to clip an omni lav on each visor. I do this a lot and it sounds great. But you sound like you are on a budget so I suggested the ME64 instead.
