recording ambient and 1 narrator at the same time

To record a narrator and recording ambient at the same time, you could use a lav in a H4N and use at the same time the built-in mic from the H4N.

Me, i have a pcm-m10. I plug a rode lavalier to record a person talking.
I don't think i can record ambient sound with this audiorecorder. i could use a rodevideomic pro on my camera for ambient and use the audio of the lav for the narration. It might be an option.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Errr why? the ambient track will be useless as there will be a person talking in the background.
Best to record each one separately.

Totally agree you should record the buzz or wildtrack afterwards and add it in post.

If you do it your way everytime you do an edit on the voice the stereo background may change.

Also in basic sound shooting rules it is why you always stop when there is an aircraft going over as if you re-order what the person is saying in the edit, you suddenly have an airplane coming and going on your background noise floor.

Narration is normally recorded in a very quiet recording studio to avoid extraneous noise. deleuze3 wants to do just the opposite?? A bazzaro world maybe?

It's the new age of doing things in a more exciting way as those outmoded video cameras and shooting techniques have been superceeded by lightweight DSLR's with rode videomics.

I would laugh it off but sadly our new Independent local TV service in the UK seems to think it is perfectly acceptable to do interviews with a radio mic on just one person or with a rode videomic atop the camera.

This is the on-line page but they broadcast the same content on mainstream terrestrial and sat too: http://www.madeintyneandwear.tv

Is the narrator appearing in video?
If not, you should record it in a very quiet place with no ambient.
If yes, then you can record him/her with the PCM 10 and the lavallier and record your ambient later and separate.
I think for the ambient it'd be much better to use the PCM 10 in stereo and with the furry wind protection on the mics, rather than the Rode videomic.

Yeah, I'd record the narration with as little background noise as possible. Then separately record ambient background noise by itself, to use in post on the edited narration to disguise any gaps or abrupt level changes.
