Recordig wind

Wind is as light, you don't see it or hear it untill it interacts with the world around us.

Even the distorded wind from my on-camera microphone reminds me of the wind that blows around my ears when I cycle.

But how can you record wind. I am making some sailing videos. Any tips to record the best wind sound. Or ways to suggest wind with sound.

thanks

Use a furry blimp or similar to isolate the mic, then point it toward the sound you want to capture. Also placing the isolated mic inside a tube/box, near a wire/cable, sail, anything that's making audible wind sounds/whistling that you want to capture.

You kind of answered your own question. Wind doesn't make any sound till it interacts with something. Since this is a sailing video I would go out and record wind on boats. A good friend did the sound for "Wind" (a film about the transpac sailing race) and they spend a lot of time recording on boats.
If you have more $ than time she would probably sell you sounds but she won't be cheap so ...

Recording suggestions.

A zeppelin with out the furry can make that whistling wind sound if you position it right with a strong wind. Windows cracked slightly in a good wind can make a whistling sound. Cables of all sorts work well, chain link fences and bare trees are good. Sheets on cloths lines might work also since you need wind on cloth.

But wind on land is not the same as wind on water so your best bet is still to record on a boat.

I recorded some nice wind sounds on partially cracked open windows, and due to the mics being inside, air turbulence hitting the mic's diaphragm was not an issue.
As Scott stated, wind on water and in sails is unique. Lot of S/FX sites around, if you can't record it yo'self, If you're ona a low budget, try freesound.org, but be prepared spend time wading through poorly recorded crap and sounds that do not fit.
