Record To ANY FireWire Device?

I was wondering about the FireStore (and others) device that allows you to record directly to disk via FireWire. Is there anything unique about the FireStore or can I connect any high-speed FireWire drive to the HVX-200?

In my case, I always have access to power in the field so battery power is a non issue. Thanks for any advice!

You can hook up any firewire drive, but you cannot record live directly to it. Using a standard drive, you can transfer files from a P2 card, but cannot record while doing it. In order to record live to the drive directly, the drive must "understand" the encoding format needed to create the proper file. This intelligence is costly, as per the expense of the special drives.

You can record live directly to a laptop with a proper capture application open. You could then hook up a standard firewire or USB drive to the notebook and record directly to it there.

I believe he was talking about Final Cut Pro or any of several apps than can record directly from a camera via FireWire. Heck, even QuickTime Pro and iMovie can do it.

Can you record live in DVCPRO HD, or is there a limit to what codecs you can do live on a laptop?

If you can do any codec, then is there any difference between a properly configured laptop and the forthcoming FS-100 besides convenience?

Specifically, can you do multiple takes without touching the laptop, or do you have to go back to the laptop everytime you stop and start recording?
