Record from HPX170 to Powerbook G4 to External HD

I've searched dvxuser threads and have found no one who recommends the hardware/software configuration that saved my butt recently.

Job: Shoot 16 interviews in four states in five days.

Equipment: HPX170, Firestore FS100 Drive, 2 ea 16GB P2 Cards, Powerbook G4 1 GHz (vintage 2003), 1 GB WD My Book External Drive.

Problem: Halfway through three shoots in one day at 720p60, p2 cards are full, FS100 Drive is full, and there's no time between shoots to offload p2 cards or Firestorm drive, especially in a moving vehicle on bad roads.

Solution: Reserve p2 cards and FS100 for off-sticks B-roll. Shoot stationary interviews using the following setup: Connect HPX170 to Powerbook via Firewire, connect Powerbook to external drive via Firewire, use "capture now" application in Final Cut Pro with external drive as capture disc, then record direct from camera, through Powerbook, to External Drive.

This was an emergency solution. It worked. A couple of times, however, the audio did not sync with the video, which was easily corrected in post.

Is there some technical reason why this should NOT have worked?

Whew!

It's been mentioned here and there, and there are some standalone programs for capturing footage...I'm sure someone will chime in with the programs which can be used with a mac, but I personally use Adobe OnLocation on the PC, and there may or may not be a Mac version
