Record 720 or 1080?

First, unless you have an oversampled sensor, low pass optical and digital filters drop information near the Nyquist limit, shown below.

Advantages of 1080 assuming both are captured the same frame rate:

1) Native for 1080 broadcasts.

2) Contains additional spatial information, even if it is at low contrast levels.

3) If you downconvert to 720 in post, 4:2:0 becomes 4:2:2 and 4:2:2 becomes 4:4:4 as the pixel count is 1/2, doubling the chroma resolution.

Advantages of 720 assuming captured at the same frame rate:

1) If the bit rate is fixed, it has HALF the compression ratio, reducing compression losses.

2) If the bit rate varies (DVCPro, AVC Intra, etc,) it doubles the recording time and produces smaller files that are easier to work with.

3) Spatial detail isn't lost recording information that isn't there. (see diagram)

What is missing in the analysis? What is your opinion?

Note for oversampled cameras the higher resolution 720p item 3 is not valid.
