Record 16x9 and output 4x3 real time

Thanks, Tom.

The answer would be, "various." I have to provide this setup as an engineer, and can't predict what cameras the shooters may be providing from game to game, but I want to get an HD record to use outside of the webcast. Cameras I'm encountering most are XH A1, HV30, and EX1.

Most of the HD cameras that provide a composite SD output have a menu setting for 4:3 or 16:6 output selection.
Sorry I know that does not help with gear selection. Have you looked at any of the little converter boxes from AJA or Blackmagic?

I know the HV30 and the XH A1 both provide an SD output that you can send while recording to HDV in camera. Youc an set the output to be 4:3 or 16:9 i believe.

Thank you.

From what I can see on the XH A1 and the HV30, the 4:3 setting in playback only affects the playback of media in the camera, and not the composite signal being passed out while recording. Similarly, I have tried running the 16:9 camera output into a Toshiba DVD recorder, on which I set the output to 4:3 pan & scan (which is the final output I want to send to webcast), but it only crops the 16:9 to 4:3 in DVD playback. I need something to do this pan & scan cropping to the signal of the 19:9 being passed out of the camera.

Perhaps I am just not doing something correct here, and even if I am correct about these two cameras, perhaps higher-end cameras can accomplish the task, but I need a solution that will work for whatever camera I am presented with (mostly consumer and prosumer).

I guess Black Magic does make an SDI to analog that will do a "center cut" 4:3 from a 16:9, but that won't help with the low-end cameras I'm dealing with.

(The Miranda converter only letterboxes. AJA has nothing.)

Perhaps I'll run into something. Here's a product idea though.

Just played with a converter box, from one of my engineer friend. might be able to solve your problem.
it is a converter box from Avitechvideo, can take various sources, from HDMI/DVI/VGA/SDI/CVBS, and convert it to SDI.
it has a build in LCM, and you can configure the out-put aspect ratio, and convert it in a real-time.
Don't ask me what is the price, Avitechvideo just launched this product this year. you might get information from their homepage.
