reconnecting clips

I am working on a promo (demo) to send out to people of stuff I have done so far. All of my completed projects are stored on my external FW drive. I added exerpts of those projects back to the browser to make up the footage I would use to make my promo. When I don't have my FW drive hooked up all of the clips go offline. Not a problem, they come back when I plug the drive back in. But are the clips really connected? I have already started editing the first 40 seconds of my promo.

I am just worried that when I am done editing and ready to output its going to say something like it can't find the media used to make the project.

So what can I do now to ensure this won't happen while I am early in the editing process.

The reason I chose to use clips from completed projects and not the original clips is because some of the clips have special effects and other cool color correction added to them and I don't have the time to go through the process of designing the effects right now.

Re: reconnecting clips

If you can see the clip in your edit monitor when you park the head over top of the clip in the timeline, it is connected. You'd get a default still saying Media Offline, or something to that effect if it wasn't actually connecting with the clip.

Sounds to me like it's operating normally, just don't move or delete the original files and you shouldn't have a problem.

If you move or delete any media (inside or outside of FCP) then you'll have to reconnect the clips if they're just moved, or recreate them and reimport them if they're deleted.
