i don't know much about lavs. i've just been using a shotgun and was looking to a wireless mic

what are your recommendations for the best deals for quality on a lav?

Hi Chad, welcome to the board. Check out the lav article in the stickies, and do a quick search for 'wireless' and you'll get about a million (probably more) answers, this question is asked basically every day. If you've got questions after that, post away and you'll get a bunch help.

The short version is that almost anything under $500, or VHF, is junk. The Sennheiser G2 , while not perfect, is good enough for most situations. A G3 will be out shortly. Other companies, Like Audio Technica, make good low cost ($600-$1200) wireless systems also, but for some reason little is mentioned about them on film forums.

Oh, and if you have real money to spend, one word: Lectrosonics. You can't go wrong there.

We have been very happy with our
G2 systems as we have four. We added a wireless hangeld to the same receiver, great sound
Used them on mny films and broadcast shows
Cheers
