Recommended virus/ad ware scanner?

Hi
I have a 2003 intel Dell notebook running win xp, and I am looking for something to do a scan and removal of spyware, ad-ware, viruses.
But I greatly prefer something I can run manually every once in a while and not something that will constantly run in the background and tie up resources on my old machine like a lot of programs try to set up house and have extra stuff.

Any recommendations?
 
I run a free version of Sophos antivirus. It's effective running in the background and has successfully recognized and deleted various malware before it could seed and do damage. I'm on Macs but there is a Windows version. I also use Little Snitch which allows me to control which programmes I allow to dial out. LS is Mac only.
 
I use the free version of the MalwareBytes.org Scanner, which was recommended to me by several top IT engineers. ( including a $500/hour consultant that troubleshoots for major corporations in town )

The free version only runs when you start it up, while the paid version runs real-time in the background.
