Recommended tape length for DVX100

Does anyone know why Panasonic recommends 63 over 83 minute tape. I have the Panasonic AG-DV2500 deck, and it also says not to use the longer tape. Does anyone use the 83 minute. Is there a chance of hardware failure if the longer tape is used.

The longer tape is physically thinner (has to be, so they can cram 30% more tape in the same space) so there may be an increased chance of wrinkling, etc.

Interesting. I remember I tried to put an 80min tape in my DVX and found it wouldn't play back anything I had recorded (with a different panasonic camera). Is this perhaps related to the 80min tape issue?

Re: Recommended tape length for DVX100

Barry, we've been using 83 minute tapes for a year without any problems. Not to push our luck, though, we are buying only 63 minute from now on.

Shaw, very interesting in deed. I've played the 83's in my Sony that we're recorded on the DVX100 without any problems. Thanks guys.

Re: Recommended tape length for DVX100

I haven't had any firsthand experience with the 83's, I'm only reporting the "common wisdom" about it. I also haven't heard of anyone specifically having problems with them either. But it's the same type of situation as audiocassettes, where the 120-minute cassettes were thinner tape and thus a little more prone to breaking or crinkling.

But the 83-minute tapes should definitely be cross-compatible between cameras. They're miniDV cassettes, and any miniDV cassette should play in any camera (unless it has DVCAM data on it, in which case it'll only play back on cameras that are capable of playing DVCAM; or if it has LP mode data on it, because LP mode is not guaranteed to work in any camera other than the one that recorded it in the first place). In Shaw's case I would suspect LP mode as the culprit, not the 83-minute length.

Re: Recommended tape length for DVX100

LP may be the culprit. I don't have the footage (or the person who shot it) with me at the moment so I can't check but I *think* it was just SP. Anyway, I'll take a look once I get a chance.
