Recommended PC For HVX200 Editing

I believe yes, I mean if your thing is basically HD editing and plain effects, The 175 opteron with a good amount (2gb at least) of memory and a raid set of hard drives will get you through just fine I think...actually more than fine. If you're onto heavy 3d composition then maybe a 2-socket dual core Opteron workstation motherboard from TYAN or iWILL could do the trick, but we're talking about a huge price difference here and I've seen people do alot with not that many if you know what I'm talking about...

WD's are fine hard disks in my book...

Just for the Hard disk question. DVCPROHD take about 133mbits/sec transfer rate. That is 16MB/sec.

A Normal IDE HD take about 40 to 50MB/sec read sequential. So no need for 10k RPM. BUT I really sugest having 5 Hard disk in Raid 5 setup. For redundancy and speed. Because your data wont always be sequantial, so by having faster read speed, even if your data is fragmented, you wont have problem reading or capturing.

Also 5 300gig would give you 1.2TB of storage in Raid 5. 20 hours of HD recording.

And for a last comment for Mac fan. Keep it to yourself please. I am freaking tired of this FUD. If someone ask in the topic for PC, there is reasons.

HD brands: I have Maxtor disks in tens of kiosks that run as videoservers 24/7 for 3,5 years now and NOT one died on me (knock knock knock). But I had Seagates, IBMs, Toshibas and others die on me before. what I changed: I put a fan in front of every disk since 2002. you know those inexpsnive little black ventilators that cool the housing. put them infront of your disks to cool them and they will live much longer. HEAT kills drives, not a brandname. Maxtor are reliable just like others. What is good on Seagate is the 5 year warranty.

Yeah, proper ventilation greatly extents the lifetime of your hard drives no matter what brand, that's why you should always check if the pc box you're getting allows for disk fans and even better than that, it houses the disks in a separate compartment. This is my box and it was one of the reasons I got it:

Expensive stuff, but it sure is the best pc case I've ever had and I had some in my life...

Hey there,

There's one more thing...
Stay away from MAXTOR hard-drives.
They are the most unreliable hard-drives out there.

You're going to want to qualify that statement. I'm using Maxtors in SATA RAID arrays, and I guarantee that I'm stressing them more than anything youu're doing...

Maxtor is less reliable. I used to manage a pool of 2500 desktop computer with maxtor, western digital, seagate... and Maxtor does offen die faster. seagate is weird too, because In my experience they die offen... But you never hear anyone else talk bad about them... SCSI seagate also died offen on me. Maxtor SCSI... I dont recall seeing one... But I could be wrong

When you are dealing with those high samples, you get to know HD is good or bad. Also what great is we get to talk with other IT director in others firm and all have the same result.

Having 10 maxtor HD and no crash doesn't mean that they arnt more at risk. They are. And the risk increase alot with time.

With hard drives one has to include model numbers and sizes for the info to be relevant. Each manufacturer has issues with different models. It's like DVD discs... just when you think you have one that's perfect, suddenly they deveop a problem.

It also has a lot to do with how they are used and where they are installed. In general I have less trouble with hard drives than many people... of course my computers seem to be more reliable as well. Then again, my vehicles seem to hold up better and last longer too... so a lot of it is up to the operator.

Yeah I'm in the same dilema. I'm going to buy a new editing setup and tring to descide which is best. I am getting a HVX and am going to be shooting a feature in the Summer/Fall but I really need something soon so I can toy around with my HVX and its footage. I was originally thinking on getting a nice PC with the Adobe Digital Video Collection and a AJA or Blackmagic HD card. I really like Adobe's software and how it works together. I'm just not sure on getting a G5 with apple changing their proccesors over to intel. I really would like to see a apple with a tower with intel processors in it because I heard FCP will be alot faster on it. But then, who knows when that will happen. Just tring to get some feedback if anyone has or thought about getting a PC using Adobe's software.....

Thanks again guys!

So, the system that I mentioned needs some changes:

1. RAID Hdisk setup
2. Better powersupply
3. Better prices :)

How about processor, motherboard and graphics?
Are they up to the task?
Also, Funkycoldg mentioned a dedicated HD card (Blackmagic or AJA)?
Don't tell me it's another 2,000 $ :(

Osmicata:

Do you have any contacts/companies in Sofia where I can see the prices etc?
Thanks
