Recommendation for channels

Hi,

A friend asked me to film his wedding.

I rented a sennheiser shotgun mic for the wedding. It will be in a church that has no mic system. It's a pretty big church. (fits approx 500 people) huge hall where you can hear echo if yell. That's all the details I will have. The wedding is far, so I can't really check it out before the wedding.

My DVX-100A is ready to go, but I wasn't sure what settings to use for the channel imput switches on the side. My friend said I have a spot about 20 feet from the center of where they will be.

I was also given a Y-XLR connector. Should I just put the audio cord into channel 1? Or use the Y and put the shotgun mic into 1&2?

Re: Recommendation for channels

Use the Y and set one channel lower than the other, so if your primary clips, you'll still have a backup track.

Re: Recommendation for channels

yes and NO

don't use the y.

put the shotgun mic into the second channel and then on the side there are switches that will let you tell the camera to take the signal from channel two and put it into both 1 and 2

THEN set the levels a little bit different so you will have a backup.

never put anything between your source and your camera if you can possibly avoid it.

why take a chance that something might go wrong? the y might be **** (radio shack?) or it might come loose? who knows, why make it more complicated.

Re: Recommendation for channels

thats good only if the level from the mike doesnt distort your analog stage
if you wonna be more holly then the pop use y connector and put 10 db pad on one of the camera inputs 9 open the phantom on onesecend channel only)
( the 10,15 db is good enouth , the other way is to put the pad after the mike it self
( there is no problem with phantom it runs thru the pad )
open one channel as -60 db input and the secend one as -50 db input ,to compinsate the low level mike
the 60 would be 50 and the 50 would be less sensitive since it has pad before
thatsis the way not distort the preamp stage ( of course the signal to noice ratio of the mike will be different and the sound would be more hissy then with out the pad , then calibrate your levels that the picks will go atleast -10 db on on miter and few db less on the secend - no y connector
the calibration on camera only can be good if only the first stage is well

Re: Recommendation for channels

First, how close will you be to the action?

Second, I would prefer a wireless lav on the groom over a shotgun. It will pick up the most important part, the vows, much better. I clip on him about belly button level. Equal distance from her mouth to his. Helps with soft spoken brides and grooms. If the minister traditionally stands between them it will pick him very well.

With a shotgun you end up pointing at someone's back and may block the other person. Plus the Shotgun is best on it's own stand, I don't put it on the camera because it picks up every movement, sound from the zoom, and if cough or make any kind of noise.

That has been my experience with shotguns. I use them if we do well wishes and special messages.

Re: Recommendation for channels

20 feet away is a long way for even a shotgun mic.

If poss,. can you rent a mic and set it in a fixed position near the main action on a stand with a 20ft cable connection. Bring that in on Chan 2 and have your Shotgun on Chan 1. ( even use the onboard on chan 1) - atmos track.

I am not sure why you are considering a Y with one microphone ???

Oh man...I was in the aisle one time, and right during the vows, a BABY WAILS AND WAILS AND WAILS AND WAILS.....oy!

Lapels or a mic stand on the altar from here on out if I can....

Re: Recommendation for channels

wailing babies make my teeth crack! >:( I've wondered if you record room tone for about 20 seconds or so, can you just lay that down in edit over wailing baby? hmm, I guess not, unless you want to get the minister to dub his stuff. haha!! :)
