I'm working in Final Cut Express 4 and would like to move up to Final Cut Pro (especially in order to have Compressor). But I don't have the thousand dollars or so to do this. Can anybody suggest some options? Any similar programs to Compressor out there?

I was thinking, maybe purchase an older version of Final Cut Pro on eBay or something. Has anybody gone this route?

Used is poss. But I would look into signing up at your local Jr College and buying the educational version, it will be current have all the bells and whistles and cost ~~50% $699 or if you buy used and upgrade (providing you can?) $499. Probably about the same in the end.

u cant just go sign up at the junior college.lol, can u? wouldnt that entail enrolling and paying tuition? lol, am i just confused?

I'll look into it, Noiz. If upgrades are only $499 for any previous version that would suggest possibilities. Or maybe some Continuing Ed course somewhere offers a discount. (And I'd get a class out of it).

The perfect solution would be to find a brand new Mac at a yard sale all loaded with the latest version of FCP. Preferably in the "free" pile.
