Can anyone recommend a good wired lav microphone? $200-500 range. I beleive that most lavs can be used wired or wireless , I will be going to use this primarily wired till I can [cough!!] buy a Lectro system!

Countryman EMW and Tram TR50 are excellent wired lav's. The Countryman sounds almost identical to the Tram, and in the wired XLR version I think the Countryman is significantly less expensive, around $200 or so.

I bought the wired Countryman on Barrys advice (thanks!), and have been extreemly happy with it. Thinking about getting another. For $200, it's a steal.

Thanks Barry and Steve ..............If I remember correctly this Countryman wired lav has been recommended on many a video forum! Thanks for clearing the smoke! By the way this Audio section is greatly appreciated and was really needed! DVXuserJunkie

You can buy the mic with a connection for whatever wireless transmitter you specify, and then get a 'wired' connection for it to use direct wired. It adds about $50 to the price, but if you're certian you'll be using it with the Lectro. . .

Re: Recommend  'wired lav ???

Northern Light and Sound have the Countryman B3 with XLR for $170.56 delivered! They offer many connector possibilities!

If you're doing interviews, recording dialog, etc, the EMW is better than the B3. Barry's comments are about the EMW, not the B3. (The B3 is also a very good mic, just for a different application.)

Re: Recommend  'wired lav ???

Thanks Steve.........The EMW goes for $165 inc. shipping from Northen Lights and Sound!

Thanks for the info, guys!

I've *heard of* the Countryman mic, but never *heard* it.

With all the endorsements here, I'm convinced it's worth owning.

Re: Recommend  'wired lav ???

The top audio pro in town here uses EMW's. I had always heard that Tram was tops, so I bought a Tram TR50 (for nearly $300, and that was from B&H). I asked him why he would prefer the EMW.

He did an amazing test. He held the two mic's together, and they nearly completely phase-cancelled each other out. What that means is, the audio waveforms being produced by the mic's were nearly *identical*, so identical that the peaks and valleys were lining up in such an identical fashion as to cancel each other out.

From that moment on I was sold. I've already got the hardwired Tram and love it, but the EMW is a lot less expensive and the sound is functionally identical.

Re: Recommend  'wired lav ???

the tram for ears had bad cabling reputation ( i have a couple that were collaps near the head) , cracks on plastic shield , sencitive to dimmer preamps(for hard wier use), stif cabling after some use , and few other uplesent suprises , the countryman other side have better preformers over the years
the only problem is a poor acssesary arsenal which comming with the mike and high prices for replsment or othisianal parts ( tram have the best collection) , very bad wind shild .
the flat version is much plessent for my ears over the boosty tram
ps
i prefer the sanken and dpa over both of them but money wise per preformers te emw is a burgen

Re: Recommend  'wired lav ???

Hey, Barry... Are you sure it's not just a combination of inverted phase systems? I tought even different sounding mics could cancel each other... Especially if they have the same pickup pattern... I hear stories all the time about lining europpean and american mics on the same shot and getting a phase-cancelled response...

Just a tought...

Re: Recommend  'wired lav ???

Re: Recommend  'wired lav ???

I think the waveform has to be pretty exact for it to cancel another waveform out... and they sure sounded exact to my ears...

Re: Recommend  'wired lav ???

I have the new Sennheiser 100 ENG G2 on order. It comes with the Senn. ME2 lav.
Is the Countryman EMW a better lav than the Senn. ME2?
Also, the Countryman comes in 3 choices: Flat, Shelved and Peaked. Which of the three choices is best for film and documentary dialog? Probably hidden under clothing?

Thanks
