recomended mac pro set up

I am geting close to buying a mac pro. What would the ideal set up be for editng standard deffinition footage and gradualy geting into hd. I dont know if the 3ghz quad core processor is worth the money. So I just want to know how much ram how big of a processor and graphics cards would be recomended for editing sd and hd on final cut studio.

I have a Mac Pro myself so I can help you out with this

If you can wait a month or 2, they will most likely update the Mac Pro's with an all Octo-Line up, if you need it now, then just buy it now.

Heres a good Configuration:
Quad 2.66
1 gig of ram (Buy ram from other websites, get 2-4 gigs of ram from www.macsales.com. I believe 4 gigs of ram costs $320 dollars)
Radeon X1900xt (Best Card you can get for an Apple)
250 gig Boot Drive (Buy Hard Drives from www.macsales.com)
Buy LCD display from www.newegg.com/www.tigerdirect.com, Apple's displays are nice but they are rip-offs.

Buy Applecare of course

I'd go with a regular quad, too. I guess the new ones will be just too expensive. If you can afford it, get the new one. I personally don't think a 3ghz is woth the money. invest in the graphixcard mentiones (x1900xt) and go get some serious ram. sd - 2 - 4 gigs is fine, hd - get some more. also, make sure to have the installation and the media files separated. make sure your system preferences are ok and then you re ready to go... oh, also, you might want to get a card like black magic or aja...

my setup (for hdv): pro quad 2.66, 5 gig ram, some drives, 2 23'' apples, x1900... love it, works really fine...
