Reccomended mics for post audio?

Hi,

I just shot a short using a Sennheiser MKH416 I bought off a friend. I'm happy with the results, but am now in post and need to do foley, general audio, ambient sound recording and am wondering what mics are good for post audio.

Am I correct in assuming that the MKH416 would be good for foley work but bad for recording outside sounds and general ambient?

Any suggestions you could give would be greatly appreciated as I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to sound.

Your 416 would be great outdoors for isolating the sounds you want to record. In environments you can't control (ie: outdoors) you want a good shotgun like the 416.

For indoor Foley work, assuming the environment is controlled (quite), a less directional mic might be nice (say the MKH50 or MKH50) to give a fuller response.

If you are doing narration, it might be nice to use a warm, large diaphragm mic.

But essentially, if you are happy with your film and you are starting out, with the 416. The fact is you've got yourself a great mic. Get it close to the sound source. Cut out echo and reverberations in the room you are recording in. You will get good results from the 416.

For your next film, it would be good to get a hyper-cardioid mic for indoor work - like the MKH50 or the AGK CK63. In enclosed spaces they will produces better results than a shotgun. These mics would also be better for recording ambient sound. At the end of the day though, the mic won't make the biggest difference, you will!
