Recapture clips

I am an Avid editor and new to Premier. I have a question regarding the recapture of offline clips.

I have a finished sequence edited that I had output to dvd and then I deleted the original media files. Now I want to come back and re-edited the sequence. I assume that I must recapture the footage of the offline files. All this I understand.

But, can I capture the offline files without capturing the entire tape again? In other words can I just capture the individual shots that were used in the final edited sequence?

I can do so in Avid, but I haven't figured out how to do so in Premiere. I have a dozen or so offline files that are long segments from a few different tapes. I don't need (or want) to have to recapture all the footage. Just what is in the final sequence.

A second question that then fits with this topic. Can I capture footage at a lower resolution, set it to offline and then recapture it later at a higher resolution to save disc space? Of course again I would like to only capture the footage used in the final sequence.

Use the Project Manager to create a trimmed version of the project. This will create individual clips from the longer captures that you can rebatch. I'm a transitory Avid editor, too--media management is a little lacking in PPro. But, using the Project Manager is a lot like running a consolidate on a finished sequence in Avid. Check out this document for more info. As long as your clips come from named tapes, and you use the Make Offline checkbox, it looks like you should get the results you want.

So, yes, you could then use this process to do an offline at low res, and then re-batch at full res. However, PPro doesn't have offline resolutions like the Avid... no 15:1s or anything similar. DV is the lowest resolution it'll capture natively, so I guess unless you're working with some outboard hardware that will let you work with different formats, you're kind of stuck with that.

Hope that works...

Thanks, that helps. I wish Premiere could capture at different resolutions. It would sure save storage space. Oh well.

I've edited on Avid, FCP, Premiere and a handful of other programs. Nothing compares to Avid for project management.
