Hello, when i preview a clip, even an imported clip with no fx, it plays really slow. i have a 2ghz with 512ram so i dont think that is the problem. Any ideas?

Obviously you have enough horsepower. Assuming you have not customized Vegas in some fashion so that it is trying to render each frame:

- When was the last time you defragmented your hard drive? In the process of defragmenting you should check to see how much free space you have.

- Is Vegas the only application running slowly?

- Check the Startup menu to see what other process are starting up during boot. Anything you can't understand could be Trojan software.

My thoughts are that you may have copied clips into a fragmented area on the hard drive. Any other symptoms of odd behavior with any application?

no i did the deframgement, video is on a dedicated drive.

The odd thing is that if i view the clip in the media pool preview, it plays back fine. As soon as i drop it onto the timeline it plays back all jerky and slow dropping frames. I have an idea that its in the settings somewhere?

That's very definitive.  If the media pool plays fine, it is somewhere in your project settings.  Have you changed frame rates or resolution?

your not trying to import 30fps into a 24p timeline are you? that's what it is sounding like.

Zoomforce, thank you once again. I have been struggling with this and was ready to drop the whole program until duh... i realized i was putting 30 frame footage in a 24p timeline. I guess it automatically slows it down. DUH :P

I found if you change the ram playback from the default it plays choppy.
