really stupid beginner question...

ok i am learning after effects at a decent pace but the effect i REALLY REALLY want to do is the indiana jones map effect.

you know a map in the background with the line tracing long and hitting the marks at each city. sometimes with a picture of an airplane at 50% transparency.

i know you can use the write on command but i'm missing something that i should have learned a while ago, i have a map on the screen but when i go to draw the path the damn map moves!

what did i miss?

could someone please post step by step directions?

Re: really stupid beginner question...

The gist of it is, create your map in photoshop, and on a layer above it, create your "line" from city to city. Then, in AE, create a new comp (call it map or something), and inside that comp, put your map layer on a bottom layer, and your line above it. Then, use animated masks to reveal the line, or you could use a solid with the write on effect as a trackmatte to reveal your line layer. Then, once it's all animated and spiffy to your liking, drop that comp into your main comp, and then you can zoom and pan around the map while it's animating, without the line/map seperating. This is probably a bit vague, but it's one approach.

well the way i was doing it was bringing in the map and then trying to use the write on effect but even though i had the brush tool selected it would act like i had the hand tool and it would move the map around.

do i need to make another layer and draw on that?

i prefer the draw on as that seems more controlable?

also, if/when i get that to work, how do you do the ones where while you writing the new writing is one color and the trail is a different color?

i've seen it done where the point is red and the trail sort of fades to yellow.
