Really, really stupid Edius Question

Mark Harris

Pain in the ass
I've been over their site and searched here, but am still slightly confused.

On their site it says that you need Edius broadcast to work with DVCPro HD. Yet they only offer one "Edius 4" demo to download, and that demo imports and works with my HD HXV MXFs just fine.

So, does that mean they only have the demo of Broadcast? Or does Edius Pro in fact also handle MXFs?

Sorry, told you it was a really stupid question, but I am a little confused by the mixed signals.

The demo version includes some EDIUS Broadcast features, in particular the P2/VariCam/XDCAM support.

When purchasing, you will still need to get EDIUS Broadcast otherwise you'll lose the P2/VariCam/XDCAM support, as well as DVCPRO HD support in general (EDIUS Pro doesn't include the Canopus HD codec, which is the DVCPRO HD compliant codec).

how are you liking edius so far? if it truly rocks, im gonna dump Vegas and buy Edius.

Timur,

let me share this, Ive made a promotional tourism material shot with hd100 at 720 24P and shown in digital cinemas as wmv hd and a TV comercial using edius. I dumped premier pro even though ive been using it for more than 10 years. Its so stable and fast. Also, canopus HQ codec is very good.

The realtime of EDIUS with the HVX and P2 will blow you away. It's a godsend. And if you are using a pcmcia slot, you are truly able to take advantage of the benefits of the P2 workflow with EDIUS. Things like being able to edit immediately, even while you are transferring footage from card to HDD. Transfer is done in the background and editing begins off the card until transfer is complete.

Concerning how robust it is... Well... yes, it's been said a bunch of times, not as feature rich, etc. as some others...

But, when I was in Indonesia, I watched a guy do some stuff with EDIUS, that made me have to re-examine just how robust I thought it wasn't. It really is quite robust... Just a bit quirky, but that could change w/ 4.5 here shortly.

And, 3rd party program support is starting to come around. Boris RED for example works with it, from within EDIUS.

It's cool timur. You saw how well it works with the MXFs. It also allows you to rename them in the bin, combine them, import them in some cool ways. Which is a godsend alone compared to Vegas.

But I was a lot more excited about it when I thought it was going to cost me $500, than I am now that I know it will be $1000. For $500 I would have just gotten it. But now I am considering editing this current project in Vegas, and use AE to remove the pulldown and do the final render. I've tested this some and it seems to work fine. Still thinking about it. It will be a bit more of a pain in the butt, but save me a grand I don't need to be spending right now.

I'm really surprised the price of Edius 4 Broadcast is that high.

I paid less than that at Full Compass more than a year ago when it first came out, and I also recall seeing a special at Spec-Comm awhile ago that had Edius 4 Broadcast selling for somewhere between $600 and $700.

I would check with both vendors to see what their best deal is.

At Spec-comm, edius broadcast is $929. They have some "trade in" program where the price is $745. I have premier, I guess I could "trade in."

And, 3rd party program support is starting to come around. Boris RED for example works with it, from within EDIUS.

Really? Is this a solid FACT? Because I was looking at buying Adobe After Effects CS3 but will go for Boris Red instead if it works within Edius. That would be cool
