Really easy question...Where to find 23.976 timebase

Okay so I haven't done much shooting in 24pA and I have searched this forum and come up with so many different answers.....Now this is what I'm dealing with:

I'm using Premiere Pro 1.5 (yes yes I hear 1.5 is horrible with 24pA)

I am trying to figure out the proper capture settings.....Because when I play the footage to preview it before I capture it, it is really jerky looking and the audio is slowed down and lags....I have a feeling it's because I need to remove the pull down sequence or that I'm not capturing the footage in 23.976...I don't know how to get it to playback smoothly...

I read many threads about changing these settings, but I can't find where to change these options at.....When I go into custom settings for the new project it only gives me a timebase of 29.97 and 25fps. And I don't know where I can find the removal of the pull down sequence....

If someone could point me in the right direction that would be nothing short of amazing....:dankk2:

Pulldown removal is automatic, or at least it should be. Choose the NTSC 24p template preset and it will give you a 23.976 timeline. If not, go into project settings and there should be a enable 2:3:3:2 pulldown in one of the sub menus. The footage is jerky in preview because it's still in a 60i stream. 24pA can't be preview even after capture unless you render it out first. Premieres removes the pulldown when you import the file, but the raw footage is still 60i with a pulldown.

I don't think I'm seeing that setting.....When I go into project settings to make a custom template I am only given options of a timebase of 25 or 29.97 because the presets are 29.97fps timebase....I have no clue where the NTSC 24p template is....I tried to capture it and within a short amount of time in there were over 300 dropped frames....Probably like you said because it is still a 60i stream?..Thanks for helping me out!

Been a while since I've used 1.5, but isn't it in a folder called "Panasonic 24p" when you're making a new project?

But this capturing stuff sounds like more of a problem with your hardware to me. You said it's jerky during playback, even before you're capturing. Do you mean in the premiere capture window? Does it play ok on the camera's LCD? On a TV?

Premiere just captures a 60i file, whether your project is in 24p or normal NTSC, doesn't matter. So your capture files are the same no matter what your project settings. It is possible to make DV AVIs that are just 24p (various programs do this - it's no different really, just saves some space), but as far as I know Premiere does not, certainly not by default when you're capturing.

You need to both open the project correctly (as mentioned above) and you will likely need to use the "interpret footage" option to set the frame rate to 23.976. Haven't used 1.5.x in a while, but I remember not having any trouble wiht 24PA footage.

I'll post a pic of what I see as my options when I first get into Premiere....My pics file sizes are way too big to put on here....I'll see what I can do...

It's fine on the LCD screen and I haven't tried playing it on TV yet but it's just jerky in the premiere capture window....And the audio lags a lot and is in slow motion compared with the audio coming from the camera...

I've never had this problem capturing 24p before....It's just 24pA I guess....I'll try it again tonight to see if the same thing happens....Thanks again!

Problem solved, but even bigger problem now!

Problem solved, but even bigger problem now!

Okay so I have cleared one thing up but now I have an unusual problem.....

I tried a different tape that I filmed in 24p normal and it continued to be jerky with the audio lagging and slowed down.....So I had to make sure it wasn't the camera so I tried my mini sony DV cam and it is doing the same thing...So it's not the camera, but I have never had this problem with the software before....I tried using Adobe 6.5 and Pro 1.5 to capture and they both result in the same jerky footage.....That leaves me to believe it is my capture software and wires.....I am using an IEE1394 Firewire Card to import the footage...And I have two of those which I tried, and they both have the same thing going on....So now I don't know where that leaves me.....hmm....One problem solved while a bigger problem is uncovered....Hopefully not as big as I'm thinking....Any ideas???

Edit: Okay so I used Pinnacle studios to see if it would upload and sure enough it works fine....The preview runs at full speed with no problems....So it's something in premiere....I have no idea what though....
