I'm looking for a slight stand that goes to at least 5ft tall and folds down to 16 inches max length... less is better.

I was going to say Lowel, but it looks like their smallest is around 21.5" when folded. The Nano is 19". The MERF is 20".
I don't know of any that get down to 16" or less.
I second the MERF stands. I have three or four of them. I used to have Lowels (which I bought in a kit and never used, then sold the kit), and have played with the Manfrotto Nano stands. The Matthews are much sturdier with a higher weight capacity.Since Harry's based in Los Angeles I suggest Matthews' MERF Stands over Manfrotto's Nano. They'd be easier to get repaired locally, & seem better built.
However both are closer to 20" when collapsed.
Looking at B&H, which makes it easy to search for size requirements, stands that go to 5' only collapse to 20" and stands that collapse to 16" top out at 4'.
Agreed. Lowel gear is not great. The only thing Lowel has going for it is that they engineered their equipment very small. Seeing as the OP's request was for the smallest light stand, I figured one of the small Lowels would probably be smaller than just about anything else. But they don't actually have the smallest stand, so -- moot point. Not sure how the Lowel current stands are but I have the stands from my old Lowel Far and Wide kit laying around and they suck. The lock down knobs all stripped out, the legs are very loose and out of whack, I don't even know why I still have them, they are pretty much useless, unlike the Pro Lights and V Lights, which are still going although I don't use them much anymore.
