Really bad capturing problems.

I finally got to go play with my sgpro and got about 1/2 hour worth of footage. When I went to capture it froze the first time after about 5 mins. After quitting FCP I checked the capture scratch folder and i had about 50 files in there.
I didn't name what i was capturing so it showed up as "untitled-av" then the second clip would be "untitled-av 1" then "untitled-av 2" etc. What I don't understand is where the "-av"part comes from. So, I erased all the files and tried it again this time I just stopped after 5 mins and was going to do just capture in 5 min intervals. The second 5 mins I went to capture it froze again.
Again I went to the capture scratch folder and there I saw was the first 5 mins. This is where it gets weird, the first 5 mins has a file size of 880mb. The second 5 mins i tried to capture did the same crap where it turns into 50 of the "-av" files but those file sizes where almost 2 GIGS EACH!
I had 92 gigs free before starting the whole capture process and have and external with 450 gigs free. I recorded in 24pnormal and was capturing with the pulldown intact to edit on a 29.97 sequence.
I don't understand why the first 5 mins. turned out fine and then the next 5 got turned into 50 different clips with sizes of almost 2 gigs each. I'm still learning FCP but i cant for the life of me figure out what is going on right now.

What version of FCP are you running? What version of Quicktime? How is the drive you are capturing to formatted? should be MacOS Extended...might be Fat32.

I ended up just deleting all the preferences and have had no problems so far. It's version 4.5 and quicktime 7.4. I haven't wanted to update QT because I'd heard about some peoples FCP failing or just failing to start after updating to the latest version of QT. Ive heard that term before Fat32 what is it?

You're running FCP 4.5 and QT 7.4? 4.5 runs best with QT 6.5.x (.2 i think)
Check your scratch disk with disk utility to see what the format is. Like Shane said it should be Mac OS Extended. Fat32 is a Windoze format and has a 2 gig capture limit.
If it is Fat32 reformat it.

FCP 4.5 and AT 7.4 are bad news together...

#47 - FCP 4.5 and QT 7.3, 7.4

Shane's Stock Answer #47 - FCP 4.5 and Quicktime 7.3 and 7.4

Final Cut Pro 4.5 is incompatible with Quicktime 7.3 and higher. The last version of the operating system that Apple recommends for FCP 4.5 is 10.3.9 (Panther) and version of QT is 6.5.2. People have had success in using the Mac OS 10.4 (up to 10.4.11) with FCP, and even later versions of Quicktime (7.1, 7.2)...although some people have reported issues. But QT 7.3 and 7.4 is incompatible with FCP 4.5.

To fix this you have two options.

1) The best option would be to back up your files and erase and install your operating system from scratch. This way you ensure that you have a nice, proper working system. Again, OSX 10.3.9 and QT 6.5.2 are the best versions for FCP 4.5, but you can go as high as OS 10.4.11 and QT 7.2.

2) Use Pacifist to remove QT 7.3 or 7.4, and install a previous QT version. The instructions for doing this can be found on the Digital Rebellion website. Several previous versions of the Quicktime Installers are still located on Apple's website. A full list can be found HERE.

Some versions of Quicktime cannot be downgraded if you are running certain OS versions. 10.4.11 and later cannot be downgraded to a QT version earlier than 7.3. To get back to 7.2, you have to downgrade the OS. And the only way to do that is an Archive and Install, or to erase and install.

Holy crap I love you guys, I dont think I have ever gotten this much help before. I am going through the process of uninstalling QT to an earlier version. Would I be asking for trouble if I still keep running 10.4.11 with QT 6.5.2? That might be a stupid question but I wanted to ask any way but hey, isnt "the only stupid question the unasked one" or something of the sort.
Oh, and yes my scratch disk is MacOS Extended.

I'd go back to QT 7.2. QT 6.5.2 is not compatible with that version of Tiger. But QT 7.2 is compatible with FCP 4.5

I just turned my cpu back on and learned that the hard way so it looks like i'll be going back to QT 7.2 in the mean time. Shane you've been a TON of help.

You need to back up all your stuff, then erase the hard drive and install the OS. This means booting from the OS install CD. Insert it, then double click on the installer.

Yes, this means you need to reinstall all of your applications again. Sorry, but has to be done if you want to ensure that things work. Better in the long run.

I ended up figuring it out. I made sure to back up all my stuff so im back at 10.4.2 now and QT 7. Now to start over again but atleast im starting fresh.
