Windows 7
Quadcore Intel core 2 at 2.4 ghz
4 gb ram
Nvidia Geforce 8600 512 mb ram (non mercury compat)

Scratch disks not on C and different audio and video scratch disks.

Is this machine decent enough to edit avch 1080 with CS5?

I am having all sorts of skipping and video stopping during playback of a simple timeline no FX.

Just need to know if I need to stay in Vegas which works wonderfully on this machine.

That system should work OK. Installing an inexpensive GT 240 with DDR5 RAM would help out a lot. Try dropping your AVCHD clips into an HDV 1440 X 1080 anamophic project setting. You should be able to play one layer of AVCHD with no effects. My Core 2 Quad can.

Depends on what kind of editing you want to do. For short clips destined for vimeo then it should be ok. For large projects with hundreds of clips, its going to start chugging. Even my i7 3.5ghz with 12gb of ram starts to chug a bit on a project with over 600 clips. My old q6600 with 8gbs of ram is struggling on a project right now with a couple of hundred 7d clips in the bin and a short 8 minute timeline. Both these machines have gpu mercury enabled, the q6600 is using a 250gts hacked.

Whatever machine it is though, Premiere takes ages to load a project with lots of clips. I don't know why they programmed it so it has to load each and every clip in the bin everytime you start it up. It literally sometimes takes 10 minutes to open a project up.

I drank the cool aid. I have ram coming to get me to my machines max of 8 gb (yea, I know I need more) and I have a Mercury hackable card coming as well. I am interested to see if it helps and or makes at least 720p video workable. I have not even tried 720p yet, maybe that works much better?

i'm not a programmer so I don't know whats under the hood, all I know is when you open up a project in Avid or fcp, the clips are there ready to be edited or dragged and dropped from the bin. In premiere, each clip has to be reloaded everytime the project is opened. Not so much of a pain when you only have a few clips but quite a pain when you have hundreds of them.

Here's what I believe the difference is.

In previous versions of Premiere Pro, the project checked every single clip while it was being opened. This makes sense, and is likely the way all the other NLEs do it as well. (Otherwise, how would the program know if any media was offline?)

With CS4, Premiere Pro changed that. The project itself now opens much quicker, and the media is checked in the background. You can still do some work while it's being checked, which you can't do in other NLEs as they check it all before the project even opens.

The net effect is that PP is faster in this regard.
