Realistic Fire effect

Hi,

I have a scene I am going to shoot where our protagonist creates a 20 foot trail of gas ending at a car. He flicks a match into a pool of gas, a flame ignites the trail, it eventually reaches the car, and the automobile explodes.

My question is what is the best way to do this to make it look realistic. I find much of the fire/explosion effects look cheesy/fake and tend to take you out of the scene.

I could do the actual explosion off screen, but I really need to see that trail of fire that leads to the car.

You see this effect in movies all the time and I am assume why it looks so good is because they actually light the thing on fire.

Thanks for you help

you do realize that cars don't explode like they were build from plastic explosives in real life.

what's the budget?

Shoot the pool of gas and flame trail with real gas and add the car and explosion in post.

Postmaster - We may do that, it's just a bit tricky because it's a street on a college campus, although when we shoot, there will be hardly anyone around. If we were going to go that route what safety precautions would you recommended? Have a fire extinguisher on hand of course.

Amr - I know, I'm taking a little dramatic license for a more climatic scene.
Budget - $200

emretufekci - Nice work, I don't suppose you offer student discounts :) off topic - but what Steadicam do you guys use?

Unfortunatly we dont have student discounts only because the fx work you saw takes a lot of pre-production and on-site supervision to make it work.

Sorry...:undecided

PS: We have a Steadicam Clipper 2 and Ultra 2.
