Realistic Day To Night.

Hello again, it's been a while. I'm getting ready to go into production for a short film i've been working on. My only issue is, the significance of it having to be night time. I do not have access to a lighting kit at the moment. I'm working on a shoe string budget. Therefore i must shoot in daylight and fix it in post. I did a couple of test shots with Mr. Andrew Kramer's day for night filter. Problem is you still see sunlight, and it appears more like, half daylight, half night. Does anyone have any other solutions to this problem. Thanks

There is a few online tutorials but the concept is very simple.

First off, you will want to add some contrast to the footage. Then you will want to desaturate the footage, since the cones in our eyes don't work at night, but the rods do, which is why colors aren't as vivid in the night time. Then play around with brightness, but not too much. To make your life easier, use a tripod for your shots and dry to keep the camera still. This will make it easy to change the sky. Make a semi transparent dark blue gradient over your sky with a high amount of feathering.

At this point, it still won't look very 'nighty'. To make the night pop out, add lights where there are light sources. Alternatively, you can use the pen tool to simply make boxes in certain windows and add glow. But for something which moves, use lights. Make sure to put the lights in 3D space.

i would recomend buying a cheap 10$ 500 watt work light from home depot or something, just to add some definition since decreasing the brightness will take lots away.
