real time render on a g5??

I tried the search and didn't find the answer...

I use FCP 4.5 HD
Why doesn't my g5 (dual 1.8, 900mHz fsb, gig of ram, 160 HD) real time render simple video and audio effects?
even text overlays, and audio overlays require a render...
is this right?  is there some FCP check box I have missed?

Check the effects menu. Items that can run in real time are in bold.
Go to system Setttings > Playback and set RT to Unlimited for more possible realtime effects.

If you have a problem you may need to reduce quality settings for playback or simplify what you need to playback (i.e turn off sound if you're checking video only)

Note that speed of system, disks and amount of RAM all play a role in what you can do realtime.

Re: real time render on a g5??

thanks i'll give that a try...
what kinda things can I expect NOt to be able to rnder real time?

anyone else care to comment on what they can/can't render with a dual processor G5?

Re: real time render on a g5??

In Safe mode you should see about half the effects listed in bold, including all the color corrections. Some of the advanced distortions, blurs and keying will not be realtime. Check your render color line at the top of the timeline. It changes color depending on what needs to be done. If it's red you have to render, orange you can play through but may drop frames. Set playback not to warn on dropped frames if you want or try lowering playback quality.

All of this is dependent on having enough memory, no other apps running and having clips and sequences match (codecs and fps). I'm also quoting for DV. If you're streaming higher quality material then it will take more power just to play through.
