Here are my specs:

intel Quadcore q6600 2.4ghz
4GB ram
gforce 8800gt 512mb
300GB 10,000rpm velociraptor hdd (OS + apps)
640GB 7200rpm WD hdd (capture scratch)
Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Vegas Pro 6.0d

When editing just a single track of DV footage from my dvx100a, I can get full frame preview at best quality, but when I add any effects, even just basic color correction, I have to switch to the preview auto setting because the frame rate becomes unwatchable. I had the same performance on my crappy old PC before I upgraded. I was hoping with my new PC i'd be able to edit multiple tracks with multiple effects applied and get real time full frame preview no problem. Do I need to upgrade Vegas to the latest version? I've been hoping to wait to upgrade until 64-bit Premiere or Vegas came out. Are people with similar specs to mine able to get good playback at best quality? My monitoring utilities show that neither my CPU nor RAM are being fully used. Any suggestions to improve performance?

What you get here is normal.

You are supposed to edit in "preview" quality, not "best". The "best" and "good" qualities are just for quick look ups and for exporting, NOT for editing.

Then, the color correction plugins, and most other plugins for that matter, take down performance 5x-10x. This is absolutely normal. Plugins are just heavy -- no matter the editor or the platform.

What you need to do is edit in this order:
1. Set to "preview" quality.
2. Cut and view that is all good.
3. Add all transitions.
4. Add plugins at the very end.
5. Export in "good" quality but in small res to verify that all is good.
6. Export the final video in "best" quality.
