Real-time audio effects?

When I appy filters to audio, I have to render. I have a Dual G5. It really makes you feel like you still have a G3 when you need to render everything.

For instance, if I wanted to apply a compression filter on a vocal track, it becomes "red" and I need to render. Does anyone have simular expirences?

Re: Real-time audio effects?

I HAVEN'T had a a similar experience - most likely because I do most audio work in ProTools and then bring it in to FCP. However, I've used a few filters here and there, and have never needed to render on my slow Powerbook...

So I'll hazard a guess: some filters, such as normalization, some smart look-ahead compressors, etc., actually need to analyze the entire audio clip and then filter in a second pass. I'm not sure if the filters you're using do this, but it's a possibility.
