real steel or non guns for feature movies?

well i was just wondering what a mid to big budget movie would use for semi/full auto weapons. do they use real steel with modified bullets or do they use non guns?

also if anybody could give me a site to do research myself that would be great. I cant find anywhere to look up what these budget movies use for guns.
