Shot a 45 min Rally at the University of Texas where Ron Paul spoke to over 4000 supporters. It was incredible energy to be part of.

The staff wants the video in a format they can play on tv as well as on the web. So I figured I would deliver in 1280x720 since I shot it in 720pn on the HVX.

They also want it to be under 300 megs. Well let me tell you I have no clue how to accomplish this and maintain a sharp clear picture.

I would love a bit of help choosing the correct format as well as the codec settings.

Should I use AVC or Mainconcept? H.264 seems to be the flavor of choice these days. Im a bit confused what the hubbub is about because I did some test renders in those formats and was not impressed with the clarity. So I must be doing something wrong.

45 minutes does not fit in 300 MBs, even in half-VGA resolution (640x360) you would have hard time to achieve good visual quality.

I suggest you either:
1. Edit out a LOT of footage, so it fits in 720p at 4-5mbps at 300 MBs.
2. Export twice, once for 720p 4-5 mbps and let it be as big as it needs to be, and once at 480x270 in a way that fits in 300 MBs and it's good for youtube too.

Use any of the two h.264/AAC encoders, personally I prefer Sony AVC.

While waiting for a response I realized there is no way to fit 14 gigs of footage in a 300 meg bottle. Im going to let them know it is not going to happen.

The problem Is they think HD is DVD quality, when in fact it is Blu-ray not DVD. I did manage to get some decent quality renders with Sony AVC last night so I saved my setting.

Thanks for the help

You'll get decent SD size renders using H.264 in Vegas under 300 megs however HD can downconvert really well to SD. Use an HDMI out from a DVD player that upscales to HD and you'd be amazed how well that will look on a large LCD / Plasma. Obviously you won't stay under 300 megs by any means but you may want to just offer two different methods of delivery.
