Is there a compatibility requirement when pairing up tripod heads with half ball sizes?

For example could I pair up a Manfrotto 509 head with a 60mm half ball?

Yes they need to match.

100mm to 100mm

75mm to 75mm

There are adapters available. I have successfully adapted a 75mm head to a 100mm tripod. Check B&H.
