Re: the above FAQ. Applies to 24p normal too?

As I clamor about the internet looking for FCP answers I ran across Mr. Kadner's FAQ at the top of this forum regarding 24pA capture for a 23.98 timeline. He says:

"DVX100 24pA footage should always be captured at 29.97 because that's what's on the tape. When a user wants to cut at 23.98 they need to properly remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown introduced by the DVX100 during filming."

What I need to know is does this apply to cutting offline captures of 24p normal on a 29.97 timeline that will be eventually output at 29.97?

I ask because I captured my 24p normal footage at 23.98 because I was under the impression that it was the proper approach. I am now running across evidence that I may have been mistaken. I now have offline footage captured at 23.98 that I have been editing on a 23.98 timeline when I thought I was on a 29.97 timeline.

So how big of a fix am I in and is tere any way out of this without starting from scratch? Might I just able to go to 29.97 at final res-up or will that funk-up my edits?

thanks

24p should have been captured at 29.97. If you wanted to keep it at 29.97 then there's nothing more to do. If you wanted it at 23.98 then you need to remove the pulldown in cinema tools.

There are presets for 24pa within FCP and plenty of documentation on dealing with 24p.
At this point you've captured at the wrong rate so it won't look it's best.
You could try creating a 29.97 sequence and drag your other sequence there. This would provide a template at least for your re-edit. If this quality level is ok then you're done. Most likely it won't be.
Recapture the clips normally (29.97) and use the template to check your edits.

After much pain and many hours wasted, I am throwing in the towel and starting over. I had tried creating a clean 29.97 timeline and copy/pasting the edit from the 23.98 sequence onto it. It sort of worked; some transitions and levels were funky and a clip or two didn't make it. But when I tried a res-up everthing went to hell so I am bailing on it. I'm even saying arrivederci to the offline editing. Nuts to that. Seemed like a good idea at the time. I don't need this res-up headache.

So I just created a new 29.97 timeline, dumped in the old edit and deleted the video clips leaving behind a skeleton of stills to act as a road map back to where I was. It'll be a pain, but the other way was becoming more painful.
