Ugafan posted a wish for a rational way to license music tracks for video at reasonable costs.

The Audio Network does exactly that, for composers, musicians and buyers. Maybe not the latest pop tunes, but a decent resource. Very reasonable rates for personal use like weddings and such, or for creative web videos that are posted for free viewing. Reasonable scale of rates for commercial uses too.

Couldn't get samples to play on Safari. There is a category for film, but there is a big hole between personal, starting at $1.25 and < 3$million, starting at $195. A low/no budget independent category starting around $25 would be much appreciated, with a per use fee tacked on to anything that went viral.

I see a 'Production Genre' called 'Film Styles', but this is just a category of music. When I click on "Usage Type", which is what determines the cost, there is no option for 'Film' or 'Theatrical'. If you hover over the "TV & Radio Production" option, you do get this little blurb: "If you wish to purchase a license for film purposes, please contact your local office. Film licences are currently not available online."

Copied from site, bulleted, re-ordered from least to greatest:

$1.25 - Personal.
  • Personal audio use only.
  • The music cannot be used in any audio-visual production.

$1.35 - Home & Student.
  • a single home video, such as a wedding and family event video
  • a single video for a university and college course
  • a single film for a film festival
  • a single unmonetised online video
  • Music bought under this license cannot be used to promote or enhance a business or professional service.

$195 - Corporate, Charity & Online.
  • a video made for a business, organization or charity
  • a monetized online video (for example, on YouTube)

$195 - TV & Radio Production.
  • a single TV production
  • a single radio production
  • a single made-for-TV or straight-to-DVD film

$695 - Radio Commercials.
  • a single radio commercial only

$695 - TV Commercials & Online Advertising.
  • a single TV commercial
  • a single online commercial

Multiple cut-downs, reversions or campaign rates available upon request.

So when they say "film purposes," I take it to mean "a movie in a movie theater" since films straight to video have already been covered.

Exactly. Which is why I said "I don't see a price category for 'Film' or 'Theatrical'." There isn't one.

Granted, the "straight-to-DVD" would cover a lot of what content producers here do, but it sure is odd to find it buried under "TV & Radio Production". I took that to mean TV shows and/or TV movies. Technically, I suppose DVDs are played on TVs. It still seems a strange place to put direct-to-DVD movies. But okay.

They cover films for festivals under the Home and Student rate. So you would not need to pay the commercial license up front. Only if and when you sold the film. That could be prearranged and included in the production budget for distribution negotiations. They offer multiple track packages at reduced rates too.

The quality and range of the music at this site is pretty impressive. I ran across it by accident via link on the website of a band I follow, the Wyos. Michael Farkas is their lead. They have compositions posted under his name.
