re-importing 24pa footage

yes, here comes another 24pa problem topic...

Well i recorder a short in 24pa, edited it on a 23.98 timeline, and made a backup on tape exporting it with the 2:3:3:2 pulldown. When I re-import to FCP removing the pulldown, it captures it at 29.97 fps, i have tried capturing it many times and no luck. i had heard there was a bug that caused this, so i decided try the "reverse telecine" aproach, but i get horrible interlacing with this process.
I have confirmed that the short was exported with the 2:3:3:2 pulldown patter (I viewd it frame by frame and it is infact 24pa), so whats the deal? any help apretiated

Im running FCP 5.1 by the way.
thanx in advance

When you went back out to Mini-DV tape, you went out 29.97, as that's the only signal the camera can put on the tape.

Like Ben said, when you went back out to camera, you encoded the new DV signal as 29.97 even though it was a 24pa stream. You can't ingest through firewire to camera in any mode other than 29.97. So on the DV tape itself, the footage is already messed up. Importing it into FCP with the pulldown or doing reverse telecine will not help. You said you are using this for 'backup', correct? Instead of putting your backup on a tape, buy an external harddrive or two of them to be safe. I don't know how big your project is but even a two hour DV project should be 23 gigs maximum. Buy two external hard drives and keep backups of all your projects on both drives.

If you really want to try the tape thing; perhaps the following might work. Use the 24pa footage in FCP and render out/reverse telecine a quicktime that will convert that footage/file to 29.97 and then export that sequence to tape...I think you'll run into audio/sync problems here though. Again, I think the most reliable way to backup is to external hard drive.

thanx for the replys. What i had read is that you could make a 24pa backup (that could be reimported on a 24p timeline) on tape if you printed to tape with 2:3:3:2 pulldown. About the 29.97 on tape; i am aware that it is exported in 29.97, all video recorded on mini-dv is 29.97, even the images recorded with the dvx in 24pa, but when you import them with pulldown removal you get native 24p, so the process should be the same if i print to tape with the 2:3:3:2 pulldown added again (the images would be just like when recorded in 24pa) and reimport with pulldown removal to get native 24p. I had read this somewhere and it makes sense to me, but when i tried it, it gives me interlacing.
any thoughts?

Where did you read this? Is this in the FCP manual or something? Can you show me a link? I'd like to see it.

It's getting converted to interlaced footage somewhere along the line, or so it sounds like. Otherwise, if it all stayed natively progressive, you wouldn't have the interlace artifacts.

The link you have there, that should do it, if you follow that process.

If you're getting artifacts, well, what deck or camera are you recording back out to? What process are you using to to it? The artifacts may be coming up in that process somewhere.

I shot in 24pa, imported onto a 23.98 timeline withe the 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal, edited it, and then exported to tape from the timeline with the sequence RT pulldown settings at 2:3:3:2.
I am now trying to import on a 23.98 timeline with the 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal and im getting the inerlacing artifacts, same happens when i import without removal and do reverse telecine. What am i doing wrong? is there anything that can be done?
