Re: Best indoor boom mic (XLR)

I am one of those people who thinks that a clip-on lav is ALWAYS better than ANY boom mic ("shotgun" or hyper-cardioid) for a sit-down interview.
I'm with you on this. I've done some of my recent work using a lav (cheap Azden EX-503) and it's been delivering more than decent results, to me.
Yep, but I have heard a lav win in the boom/lav competition if the ambient noise is too great and I can't get the right angle and distance with the boom.
A lav *would* be better in most cases due to proximity. Better signal-to-noise ratio imho.

Jeeze Richard, You must never have heard a decent boom mic. Rent yourself a Schoeps cmc641 and have some fun. :)

Lavs are the right choice if there is no boom op; really the only choice. If there is an audio person, why wouldn't you use both? I have several Countryman lavs and also use AT4053b small condensers. Given good placement of both and a decent recording situation like a one person interview, the 4053b wins most every time. If there is an exception it would be where there is a really noisy background, and if there is, I would still use some sort of boom mic.
