Re: Best HIGH POWER LED Fresnel HMI Replacement?

Lets not forget that "5000w equivalent tungsten" is similar to 1.2 HMI in its output... So yeah all nice and powerful but not exactly an output we don't already have easy access to.

Yeah, I agree. I actually think the Mole 900w LED is almost more interesting in Tungsten than Daylight for that very reason. Where it will get really interesting, is when they come out with an 1800w LED, that gives us the output of a 2.5k HMI or 10K Tungsten, that can be plugged into any old household socket.

Or even more interesting, when we can have 2000w plasma lighting, that gives the equivalent of a 4k HMI or 20k Tungsten(!) and can be plugged into household wall (well in 240v land at least) or run off a little suitcase gennie.

Once these hyper-efficient technologies make bigger lights more accessible, it's really going to open up some options for people in today's tight-arsed budget conditions.

I'm shocked about the minus green, Mole said they are able to tweak the color spectrum to get the green out. Was it the Daylight or Tungsten version? The Tungsten version does have a better color rendering output than the Daylight on paper.

Do you have any video or pics of the SeniorLED in action?
It is the tungsten version. I don't have photos of the light in action, just a photo I took of the light not in action which probably isn't worth posting here.

That said, lets not get too hoopla over the color cast as color cast depends as much on LED and on the camera's sensor (RED being super prone to color spikes).
Never thought that a camera would affect the color cast of LEDs; maybe that makes sense. I know with the Litepanels Astra most people rave about its great colors, while one person on DVXuser said he felt the need to add negative green to it. The guy I mentioned who has the 900w Mole LED and adds negative green has the Sony FS7 and Sony FS700, with Sony being known for not having the best color science.

Actually any photo would help. I'm trying to gauge a sense of size, handling and ergonomics as well. So would you be able to post it?

..with Sony being known for not having the best color science.

I think Sony is actually on the opposite end of the color science spectrum. Up until recently, they have been known to having too much green cast in their images. The A7RII and A7SII have fixed this apparently.

Thanks for this. The HIVE lighting fixture featured in the link above, what would the light output compare to in terms of a Tungsten or HMI fixture?

I emailed them awhile ago asking that very question and they suggested the killer double fixture kit I believe for a 1.2k hmi comparable source. The person who emailed me mentioned they have a new fixture coming out soon that will be a 1.2 equivalent. It may be a better idea to wait since the two fixture setup seems a little crazy.

A Hive Wasp PAR light is a 275w fixture that has the approximate output somewhere between a 400w - 575w HMI. The variance is dependent on how the fixture is used as there are different efficiencies. When a Source 4 Leko head is put on the front of the Wasp the output is nearly equivalent to that of an 800w "JoLeko" (this configuration is a thing of beauty as the Leko head pops on in a couple seconds with no fussy alignment).

There are other more powerful fixtures in development at Hive, but nothing confirmed in wattage or schedule.

Would that be the HoneyBee?

I'm trying to figure out how to best configure the Wasp to get the most light output.

Their advertised photometrics suggests the Wasp with no lens outputs 5,000 FC at 10ft. This appears to be similar to spec to the Profoto 800W HMI (with Magnum 7 attachment) as it is advertised at ~6,000 FC.

Does this sound right?

Of those who have used HIVE Plasmas, is there any green cast in their lighting?

With no lens at all it is a very spotty light. Not sure the application you intend to use it for.

No green cast. It has amazing color.

That might be pushing it a bit. If you could do it with a 575w HMI could could do it with a Hive Wasp. But I don't think either would be sufficient for the way I would likely wish to light such a thing.

I probably would need two. I've seen it done with an 800W HMI.

However looking at the photometrics, the Wasp (with no modifiers attached) appear to be equal to an 800W HMI out of the box.

What is the physical beam spread of the 800w at a given distance? If they have about the same brightness AND the same beam spread at a given distance then they are equal in output for that task.

Hey Mitch:

How does the light output (overall intensity) of the Wasp compare to the Nila Varsa (no lens, no diffusion, just bare out of the box).

I have some experience using the Varsa and this comparison would help me to get a good perspective on the Wasp.

I don't have the photometry's handy but I can confidently state that the Wasp is significantly more powerful than the Varsa. I like the Varsa and it's interesting especially for battery-powered work, but the Wasp definitely spews more photons. Also, better color and single shadow.
