Re: Best HIGH POWER LED Fresnel HMI Replacement?

What is the BEST high power LED Fresnel HMI replacement out there?

By best I mean in terms of overall brightness, CRI rating, compactness and weight?

I've demoed the Aadyntec fixtures and to me they're green and I don't think there is enough output from the JAB to compete with full sunlight(at least not at the normal working distances I'm used to with equivalent sized HMI's). The Punch Plus is powerful, but it is a monstrous fixture that is not what your average guy is going to be carrying around in his truck, like you would with an 800 HMI or two. Not hating on them, I've talked to the guys and really like them and I like that they are built here, too. I'm just being honest in my evaluation of them. I still haven't seen an LED fixture that is equivalent in power AND size to my BronKobold 800's that I would buy over them. To get a real powerful LED HMI equivalent, you're going to have to get a really big fixture or a few smaller/more manageable ones. From my experience none of the LED fixtures out there are equal to the wattage of HMI fixtures that they claim to be. The photometrics tell you that and a real world demo will tell you that, BUT the LED manufacturers still insist on advertising them "up a class". Even though their own photometrics say otherwise.

I don't believe any such light has been developed yet. You said HMI fresnel, keep in mind that a fresnel is nearly a point source at full flood. Not that it really matters since almost every light that hits an actor's face is getting some sort of diffusion treatment, but even so, the output of an HMI is no easy task to recreate. It's an arc that's enormously intense yet physically very small (the space between the electrodes on even an 18k is only around a couple inches).

Personally I have much more interest in replacements for bigger tungsten heads since I think they could lead to much bigger savings. HMI's are already highly efficient and they have pretty good color reproduction, and just about all of them under 18k's have gotten quite a bit more compact since single ended globes came into use.

Anyone used the Mole Richardson 10" 400W Studio JuniorLED or Litepanels 12" Sola/Inca 12?

The Mole seems to have better flood output while the Sola/Inca 12 have better spot output. Would this have to do with the diameter of the fresnel?

The Rotolight is nothing like the scale of output available from real high-powered LEDs. It is a basic 1x1 in a different shape.

I've always been unimpressed with the output of the original Rotolight units, but I noticed that the RotoLight Anova Solo is listed as "3,900W Tungsten Equivalent". Is it really equivalent to almost 4K of tungsten ?

If size and weight are a concern for you it might be worth checking out the Zylight F8. It doesn't have as much punch as the bigger LED fresnels but its weatherproof and I think you can run it off a battery

Eventhough size and weight are a consideration, I would put punch at the top of the list. My philosophy is that a brighter light can help us to:
1) Modify the light better while preserving the amount of light needed to fill the scene
2) Help us to fight off indoor windows and unwanted indoor practicals.

I recommended the Mole 900W LED to a local guy who has a studio, he bought it, and I got to play around with it for a bit at his studio, though I didn't get to test it next to anything. Here's what he said about it when I asked him his thoughts on the light and what his lighting gaffers thought of it, "The Mole is great but you have to use a 1/4 minus green on the light to color correct. The film guys are all skeptical but I tested a 5k Mole next to the LED Mole Senior next to each other in an airplane hanger last week and it has the same visual light output."

I'm shocked about the minus green, Mole said they are able to tweak the color spectrum to get the green out. Was it the Daylight or Tungsten version? The Tungsten version does have a better color rendering output than the Daylight on paper.

Do you have any video or pics of the SeniorLED in action?

thats true, i'm guessing it was daylight, it might me better to buy a tungsten version and put a full CTB when you need it.

Lets not forget that "5000w equivalent tungsten" is similar to 1.2 HMI in its output... So yeah all nice and powerful but not exactly an output we don't already have easy access to.
That said, lets not get too hoopla over the color cast as color cast depends as much on LED and on the camera's sensor (RED being super prone to color spikes).

its true we have access to that output but at the cost of having a generator, 1.2 hmi equivalent that you can plug to any house its just terrific news.

Never ran into a household where i couldn't pull 15a to power 1.2... Remember that the Mole LED is pulling 900w , that is not that far behind the 1.2.

I'm also interested in some led fresnels, the Photon Beard (UK based) lights have had good reviews,
anyone have experience with them? High price for the 2 head kit but happy to invest if they're worthwhile
