re: Abel Cine and questions

re: Abel Cine and questions

Hi,

I'm about to buy my first DVX (Panasonic dvx100B) from Abel Cine in New York. I'm making a documentary film and have grant money to do so. My question is simply, they offer it for just under $3500 plus a $500 rebate. Do you guys think this is a good deal? Is there a better one out there?

Any pointers in my negotiation if there is to be a negotiation or bargaining? Also, since this is a mobile production, I think I will be needing a light to attach to the camera....someone suggested a pag light. Does anyone have any suggestions on a brand and / or where to buy on?

Thanks,

Brian

Call charlie at Abel, hes a great guy. Abel is like a small mom and pop business. B&H while private is more impersonal and the staff is sometimes rude.

Ha! You got that right! "Rude" is an understatement. When you call them, you feel like you are talking to a bar keep at Dick's Last Resort....regional reference to all you San Diegoians....

PS But if B&H is definitely $100 dollars cheaper, I would buy from there. They are very reputable and $100 bucks is a $100 bucks. Or, call Abel and see if they price match? They could check the price themselves to verify it and might possibly do it for you...

I believe that Abel is still offering the DVX User discount (be sure and ask for it) on items. Not sure which, and not sure about NY since I deal with the one out here in CA.

Check with Willoughbys. They smoked everybodys price when i bought. Just dont let them sell you any accessories/junk---they will try.
As far as Abel NY goes, couldnt get them to do business with me. No how, no way. Left several messages for two different people in the pro-video dept over two days saying i'm ready to buy, please quote me a shipping price. They never returned my calls. Doesnt matter because I'll never attempt to do business with them again.
Called Willoughbys out of frustration and the price they quoted me was actually lower than what their website advertised.
If nothing else, try to give someone other than B&H your business if you can.

Blaine advised me to call Jerred (is that how you spell his name?) over at Abel and I left a message on his voice mail, he called me back same day, we discussed rates for the Cartoni Focus, got that tripod this Monday (thanks for the tip, Blaine).

I had a great experience with Abel, and I will do business with them again.

re: my dvx exerpience at Abel and B & H

re: my dvx exerpience at Abel and B & H

Hi,

I just had the same situation with Abel. They didn't call back. I even emailed them. No contact. Then I finally called again out of frustration, told an associate I've been waiting for a few days to do business, and she then put someone on the phone. But the guy was irritated...sounded like he didn't want to talk with me so soon. He didn't really make any kind of pitch...just answered my questions. It was kinda awkard. I just called B & H as someone had suggested and they (my sales guy, Joe) just seemed much easier to deal with. So it looks like I'm gonna buy from them. Though I will check out Willoubys like someone suggested.

Could you guys recommend a good kino light, manufacturer and where to buy from?

Thanks,

Brian

Hey guys, sorry to hear you had a bad experience with our NY office. If you ever have problems getting an answer from them PLEASE contact us out here in LA. We have access to the same inventory and can still have the item ship from NY. We've worked hard to earn a great reputation (especially through the DVXUser community) and we don't want to do anything to jeopardize that.

Damn Skippy. i went with JAck to Abel to pick up his prize from Horror fest, and Pete abel came out to meet us.

a couple months later, i bought my HVX from them, and he remebered me, and made sure i was completely satisfied with the purchase.
