Raylight bugs...

Experiencing weird bugs using vegas 8.0 with Raylight and mxf files on PC - windows XP pro.

Bug #1 - When rendering, the sound will no longer be synched to the image. When I then check my timeline I find it is , in deed out of whack. I close Vegas and reopen it and everything is back to normal. It has been doing this one time out of two.

Bug#2 - I am getting random sound SPIKES in the final rendered file. I play the quicktime file, all looks good and all of a sudden a loud ZEEEEK, very high pitched. When I check my timeline I cannot see a spike in my sound file. It must happen while rendering? My master mixer indicates the original project levels to a A-OK at the frame where the spikes occured in the rendered file.

Bug#3 - Cropping an event in Vegas caused major weird results. It seemed to work fine at first, but after I closed my project and repoened it a few days later none of my crops/pans worked. What I saw was a weird stretching of the image, like I had stretched it sideways, instead if a crop/pan to follow my black crow flying across the desert.

HAS ANYONE ELSE EXERIENCED THESE AND WHAT DID YOU DO ABOUT IT.

This is not promising.

i think I might have figure out a way to get rid of the ZEEEK. It seems that trimming the sound file in the timeline just a hair where the spike occured while rendering might fix it.

I just did this and rerendered and the ZEEEEK is gone.

So it might be linked to the start of a new sound file on timeline... Puzzling....

I await your thoughts.

I've experienced all of these problems. I've sent word of them to DVFilm; generally they've said the problems were fixed in updates, but they still crop up now and then.

I find that the pan/zoom stretching tends to happen in the project settings which match the frame size of the footage, and not in others. So, if you're working with 720 footage but cut on a NTSC 24p widescreen timeline, it doesn't happen.

Less than useful, I know.

Yeah, I had those exact problems. Easy fix, although I still get them occasionally... go to View, at the botttom is "rebuild audio peaks" click on this, audio peaks are rebuilt, check to see if the waveform spike is still where you heard the pop or screech, if it is, zoom in and out with the scroll wheel on your mouse, and it should disappear, if it doesn't, repeat these steps.

I noticed this first because the waveform will not match the audio when it happens. Annoying at first, and seems to happen less frequently now. But it's a minor glitch for working in Vegas with DVC Pro HD...

Ok so that may fix the audio spikes, but what about the crop? Why does it happen and how do we fix it?

Also why is tech support for Raylight inexistant? It has been over 2 weeks since I contacted them about my problems and all they did was email me once with questions and nothing since. In short, I am left to fend for myself. I don't mean to bad mouth here because I am grateful I can work with my mfx files and vegas. So I am grateful those guys came up with a software that can do it.

HOWEVER, I feel that for the price I paid, I should get better tech support. Afterall we are not talking about a $40 software. The only help I have received so far has been through this forum.

PS: what other bugs have you guys experienced, just so I brace myself for impact ;)

PSS: Will I be able to edit and render an entire 130 min film this way???? I am starting to have serious doubts...

Well, yeah, you should be able to. At least, our project, at 95 minutes at this cut, has been rendered out to MPEG 2 for DVD, Windows Media and Quicktime for preview, and occasional Still Image renders.

I find that with any project, using any software (including FCP) there are always a few problems to work your way through. It just seems that that's life with computers and technology.

You'll figure it all out in the long run; and it's probably not realistic to expect Apple or Sony level tech support from a niche product like Raylight, no matter what the cost. And in the software world, $200 is not a lot of money. Not to diminish your frustration, but it wasn't long ago that people expected to pay $25,000 + for editing packages.

And I think your cropping problem may have something to do with your project / media settings. Double check your settings - both aspect ratio and pixel dimensions. What size footage did you decide on? Are you working with 720P? Seems you discussed using either 720P or 1080P a while back... If you decided on 720P, your dimensions should be 1280 x 720 with pixel aspect ratio of 1.0 (square). You shouldn't be cropping at all.

Let us know what you're working with and check those settings...

I am shooting in 720-24PN and my Vegas project settings are 24P dimensions = 1280 X 720 and pixel ratio = 1.0 (square)
Filed order = none
frame rate = 23.976 (IVTC Film)
pixel format = 8 bit

I think all above correct?

Currently it seems I only have a problem with the CROP. Applying effects to an event seems to work OK, even If I make it a bit complicated (programing key frames within the event)

BUT CROP does not work, even if I do a simple crop with no keyframe. Basically what I see is not what I get: Say I have a woman sitting at a table with a plate in front of her and I try to crop to get only the woman's face, I can see the cropping frame right on her face but when I look at the preview screen I see, for exemple, only parts of the table, looking stretched sideways for exemple...

If I move the cropping frame left and right, the preview distorts accordingly, as though I am stretching the image further... if I get the cropping frame outside the image altogether the preview does turn black, at least this much works (not that it is useful to me HAHA!).

??????????

Have you tried the same in Vegas 7.0, I think its more stable with Raylight,.....I have 6,7 and 8 all on my machine....

Faith, is your preview quality set to "Preview"? Try "Best" and see if the cropping problems persist.

"Good" should be OK, too.

I HEARD BACK FROM THE RAYLIGHT TEAM,

They had an answer to solve the cropping problem,I thought I shoud share it with you: Note that I have not tested it yet, since my puter is at the doctor right now being upgraded.

TO FIX CROPPING PROBLEMS RAYLIGHT TECHS SUGGEST:

"This can be solved by entering a rotation of 1.0 degrees, enter, then .01 degrees (effectively zero). "

I'll let you guys know if it works, when I can test it next week.

ALSO I was told they have an update now that fixes some of the vegas 8 bugs, so I will download it when I get my puter back and see if it really fixes it.
