ratios

I've been really studying filmmaking the last couple of years or so....and the one thing I haven't really caught up on and don't really understand is ratios...

does anyone know any good sites that might be able to understand the meaning..purposes..and uses for ratios

If not could someone maybe help me out here.

What sort of ratio? Lighting contrast ratio or some other ratio (rule of thirds, 45/180, something else?)
