Rates..Hiring a sound man...etc...

I was approached about doing a freelance shoot coming up in December. Do I give the promoters of the event my rates to shoot the event or do I allow them to tell me what they are willing to pay me for the event? I was also told that I would a need a sound guy for this as well. Do I pay that person up front before the shoot. I have never had the need for someone to run audio for me so I am kinda in the dark on whats the norm.

if they have their own equipment, i'd say $300 a day. if you have to supply the equipment, $200'sh. thats what my charge usually is for freelance sound gigs that i've done. but it all kinda depends on what the budget is and whatnot. and i'm in nc, so i'm familiar with the market here.
 
In Chicago, I usually charge $300 w/o my gear, $350 w/ my gear for audio on a 10-hour day. 3/4 that rate for a 5-hour half day rate.

I never expect clients to pay up front if I know them (or know of them). Net 30 days is the standard on all my invoices. -vic
