Rates for quick meetings

I have a client where I have a Half Day Rate, a Full Day rate, and a hourly rate. Today, for example, I am going in to meet with them for about an hour however it's starting to not make monitary sense to commute to their office, talk with them for an hour and commute back and only get paid for an hour's worth of work. Charging them for a half day seems a bit pricey too. So what do I do? Do I increase my hourly rate to something worth my time? Whats the best way to increase my rate for a client? I don't want to lose them.

some of the guys i hire charge me for travel time to location. this is for an F900 camera package, operator and sound guy. i don't know what field you're in though so this might not be useful. but i should say that's just the guys on the east coast. the west coast guys I hire don't do that.

If you meet w/them pretty regularly and the commute is enough that it eats into your day, which it sounds like it does, then I would either up your hourly rate or charge for the commute.

On the flip side if they are a really good client and they bring you lots of business you just might have to take the loss to keep them happy. If this is the case one thing you could do is state a change of policy where you say you will start charging clients for commutes over X minutes/miles, but for this client you'll wave the travel charge because they are so awesome. That way you'll have put out there how valuable your time is and the client gets a warm-fuzzy 'cause you are making a special exception for them.

Really what to look into, is if the commute and meeting stops you from being able to work for the rest of the day. If it cuts into potential other working opportunities, than you should be charging your half day rate at the least.
