Redundant Array of Independant Disks

RAIDS are good if you are concerned about disk failer. or (raid 0)if you are editing uncomprressed files...like tiff sequences and need extra performance from your drives. some systems require a raid setup in order to operate....wuteva...

not sure what you would get out of them in animation. i have worked at places in the past that use them to store projects on, to have redundant copies of a project in case of disk failer, its about peace of mind mostly, never herd of a drive failing at any of the places i worked at, but better to be safe then sorry i guess.

just make sure that you make backups of your projects on dvd or tape or another drive or whatever...and store that shite in a safe place. when im on a project, i make copies of edits/XSI-MAYA Scenes/AE comps every week on dvd. just a good habit to get into.[/quote]
Woops, brain lapse. Good point Rich, they wouldn't help animation in the least.

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

usb2 is supposed to be faster then firewire...but, i have read a few tests online that say there is almost no difference.

Oh I can feel the difference, and how. ;)

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

sorry John . . . was out on a bank holiday and came back to find this outrageous violation. Sorry dude . . . so sorry :( :'( I hope your new machine makes you feel better and this time make sure you get it chained to the floor! As for your new machine . . . I am presently trying to silence my old one . . . changing fans and cpu coolers. A silent pc is possible to achive! Just thought it may be a nice thing to note  ;D

Yes, RAID 1 is great for redundancy but is slower. I would never recommend that for any real time A/V work.

I'm suggesting RAID 0 (striping) for speed. With RAID 0 multiple drives are mapped as one drive. Therefore, two 250gb drives appear as one 500gb drive. The RAID controller splits the reads/writes to either disk. Better info in the links I posted.

Probably no need for a RAID 0 setup for doing animation since the overhead of rendering is going to be higher than the disk access.

But, for capturing DV or HDV and for editing in real time, the faster the disk the better.

never herd of a drive failing at any of the places i worked at,

Oh jeesh, you just jinxed yourself! ;)

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

Wait a minute, John sure did recover quickly form his horrible violation and theft. Maybe a little too quickly. Hmmmmmm How much do we really know about this "John Hudson?"

;D

When you get the new setup don't forget to take a picture and post it. It's like porn for us geeks. ...Porn is also like porn for geeks.

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

lol

Will do. I'm not too thrilled about it. The one that was stolen was doing just fine for me. I figure since its a write off, why not WRITE IT OFF in style. Sides, BF 2 is coming in MArch and Ill need the 256 Card

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

Speaking of RAID...

Just a couple of months ago we were in last-minute, deadline-next-morning crunch mode on a huge project, a 20-minute video for a company's massive annual employee meeting.  The main editing station had a multi-disk RAID.

Six hours before deadline, one of the disks died.

Had we been RAID 0 (for speed) we would have been SCREWED.  Fortunately it was RAID 1 (for redundancy) -- we pulled the dead drive out and finished the product and met the deadline.

But with hard drives so big and so cheap nowadays, I'd never go RAID 0 -- the risk of failure is doubled, and you lose everything on both drives.

Or tripled if you're using three . . . and so on.

True. That's why I only use it for my A/V drive. All that data can be grabbed from tape and rendered.

All of my projects, docs, etc. are on a standard drive w/full backup. knock on wood.

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

most 3+ gighz pentiums have Hyper-Threading. which is a way of splitting the proc into 2 parts...letting you run different tasks on different halfs of the proc. so to the computer, it will look like you have 2 processors.

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

that would have been sweet...but no..i just looked and my single 3.4, and it looks like 2 3.4s...stupid computer...haahahahaha...

you got that machine pretty quick...i always thought dell would have been slow...but maybe thats only for laptops.

i was looking into an alienware laptop...but they were like if you order now you will get it around febuary...im like F that...

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

Feburary? WTF?

I have always had some nic experiences with Dell; this one wasn't ordered until Friday (Long story...).

I'm stoked now. The 256 GC is what I am jacked on; lol
