Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

Sorround Sound.

Not sure if I checked that (it's not too late to change as I can call in the A.M.).

I did get the Audigy 2 (D) and there was an option that listed Dolby Logic 5.1 but............

My speakers at the current time are not geared towards Sorround Sound (Havent needed it yet).

Does Audigy mean they are sorround sound capable or............... ?

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

The Audigy2 should be at LEAST 6.1 surround capable, and I think your model will be 7.1 capable.

I have the first-gen Audigy2 card, and yes, I get to tool it up Dolby style in Vegas . . .

Ah, no, I was speaking up dual booting the OS. Not dual processors. By having the OS dual boot (two installs) you can have each one setup to load just the drivers you need. Doing that can give you a really fast NLE environment.

All SATA drives, Non-RAID

You might consider doing a RAID 0 setup. Not that more expensive and faster. Check out the info here:

I have a RAID 0 2x250GB = 500GB SATA setup that I use for my A/V and export drive. The setup is fast enough that I can use the drive for both.

Matrox has info that's good even i you don't have one of their systems:

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

God those look cool.

I have to wait and upgrade later as 'work' (my work) dicates it. At this level I'm hacking away in my sparetime.

Damn. :-/

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

A RAID would be overkill and I have seen it to be unnecessary. I have five HDs on the computer I built and they are not RAID. They work great with multiple projects and big projects.

Your specs look good on the computer John. I just hate all the crap they install on there that runs in the background.

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

LOL

I'm diggin it. What can I say? I'm a PC guy. I'm a Windows dude. I like Dell. It's easy for me; I'm not gonna build one myself (not another hobby to undertake!). I'm also a creature of convenience. Easy, build, buy, plug in. It's worth it to me. I'm kind of stoked on the XEON though.

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

for dv i just like using firewire drives..just picked up a 250gig maxtor for 250bucks. im not into the raid thing

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

By the time I'm posting in this thread, the angry posts are done with.

Well here's another one for ya.

DAMN THE THIEVES TO HELL.

On a lighter note...RAIDs... Drooooool. (Not overkill for animation!)

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

Are Firewire drives separate to 'built in ieee 1394? Do they plug in via USB?

TC - I havent got it yet :-/

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

Umm, I don't know. I'll just load it up to my site and PM you a URL.

???
You can get a Hard Drive that plugs in via Firewire(IEEE1394) but the USB 2.0 drives are rated faster in transfer rates.
How many Hard Drives did you order with your computer?
You should be able to get two in there.  There may also be SATA connections for your hard drives.  I Have 3 internal HDDs in my computer.
My system drive is C: 40GB EIDE, T:160GB EIDE, F:250GB SATA.  I Have 2 external USB 2.0 drives at 120GB each.

Sorry John, I got D crazy :-/

Yup, I guess it depends on your requirements. I looked at the costs and found that getting the two SATA 250gb drives in a RAID 0 setup (total of 500gb) gave me the storage I needed and the speed necessary for real-time rendering/preview of audio and video at hardly more cost than a non-RAID setup.

Re: RAT F*** SON of a B******!

R.A.I.D.

Redundant Array of Independant Disks

RAIDS are good if you are concerned about disk failer. or (raid 0)if you are editing uncomprressed files...like tiff sequences and need extra performance from your drives. some systems require a raid setup in order to operate....wuteva...

not sure what you would get out of them in animation. i have worked at places in the past that use them to store projects on, to have redundant copies of a project in case of disk failer, its about peace of mind mostly, never herd of a drive failing at any of the places i worked at, but better to be safe then sorry i guess.

just make sure that you make backups of your projects on dvd or tape or another drive or whatever...and store that shite in a safe place. when im on a project, i make copies of edits/XSI-MAYA Scenes/AE comps every week on dvd. just a good habit to get into.

firewire drives use "built in ieee 1394" to connect to your computer. fireiwre is ieee 1394. the dv cable you connect from your dvx to pc is firewire...a 4 pin - 6 pin firewire cable...firewire drives connect using the same thing.

usb2 is supposed to be faster then firewire...but, i have read a few tests online that say there is almost no difference.
