Rapidly/easily take off shotgun

I plan on getting the Audio-Technica AT897 shotgun microphone to use with a Sony PD170. I want it to mount on top of the camera, but I also want to be able to rapidly/easily take it off to gather nat sound and hold the mic in my hand (while I shoot). Can I get by without a shock mount, but instead, just a mic holder?

Also, I want to get a furry softie (wind cover) - how does my "rapidly/easily take it off" request come into play with a wind cover as well?

 Thanks in advance,

Jake

Use a shockmount

Use a shockmount

Holding a mic in your hand is bad news. When you say "rapidly/easily", I get the idea that you'll be spontaneously motivated to do this, and likely because something exciting is happening (which means you'll want to be rolling). ANY point when you're fumbling with the mic, taking it off the camera will end up being unusable because the audio will have handling noise and the camera will be shaking. This said, if you can wait for the right moment to remove the mic, handling after that point will still be an issue, and you will want to have as much sound absorbsion as possible, which means using a shockmount. Get a shockmount and a shoe adapter. You'll be glad you spent the extra cash.

The wild protection won't effect this set-up, really, especially if you choose to get a shock mount, at which point you can treat all three components (mic, mount, softie) as a single unit.

hi, regarding a DV mic?? PSC has a DV mic for camera as well as for boom and since you are using Sony170 phantom supply should not be a problem. They come with a few accessories. I tried it personally and audio is clean, and not bad in terms of noise rejection for a budget set. If you can compare with the NTG1 or NTG2 by Rode.
